Oeorge O'ShauBhnessy, the strangest murderess ever locked tip In the TomHh. Although her crime wu premeditated, the chances ara that she will never be punished. The woman has only been married a year. Then her husband showed marked attention to a young slrl. and the wife reproved him. There were a number of arguments and finally the husband announced that he would com mit sul-lrle. Now Mrs. OShouKhnessy Is a devout Catholic and the threat terrified her. According; to her belief. If her husband took his own life, his soul would be lost forever. So to save him from this fate, she picked up a revolver and shot him to death. Then, having saved her husband's soul, she surrendered to the offl.-ers of the law and demanded to be executed with as little delay as possible. Please say a msas for his soul snd pray for him during the Sunday masses. He has nobody In New York and I would like that oo would see lilm burled re spectful In a Cath.iic cemetery. The woman shows no signs of Insanity. a-e Is simply a very devout Catholic. The t nances are, however, t.tat she will be sent to an asylum. It Is doubtful if a Jury woul.l even con vict her of manslaughter, but it Is also unlikely that a Judge would free her. Judge FtsMer Uujetl." Jude Warren W. Now that the Hoe" sale 'Is over, cer tain eminent authorltlea on books and bindings are coming to the front with the announcement that certain of the volumes disposed of there are spurious. One msn when asked why he did not make the charge during the sale, re plied: "It Is not ethical In our business to say anything about a sale until the sals is over. Frequently frauds and Imitations are sold, but we do not speak of tliem- until the conclusion of the sale, because it might work an In justice snd affect many things that are genuine." In other words. It is wrong to decry a book In the hands of a fellow-dealer, but when once he has got it sold and got the money, it Is "professional ethics" to mock at the buyer. -Decision Fixes "Swindlers." A recent decision of the United States Court of Appeals has put a "crimp" into a swindle which usually flourishes around thia season of the year. The decision Is that persons advertis ing through the malls waste and worth less land as good homesltes are liable to arrest and Imprisonment In the Fed eral penitentiaries. Tricksters have reaped a harvest In former years. Usually tliey advertise In such a way that purchasers believe they are buying In a valuable suburb or seashore resort. If It la. for ex ample, St. James, the famous colony of actors, the "ad" will read: "St. James' Manor Park. St. James, Long Is land," Investors, of course, think they are settling at St. James, while what they get is a tract in a dismal swamp, 10 or 15 miles inland, and with abso lutely no accommodations. It is a despicable form of robbery, because most of the victims are poor persons, who are attracted by the small payments asked, and see a chance to get a homestead at reasonable rates. It has been figured that In previous Summers fully $1,000,000 has been tak en In annually by these swindlers, and heretofore the victims have had abso lutely no redress, aa the crooks were i ... ...r,.i . Frederick Gebhard, in hla day, was regarded as the leader of fashion. He inaugurated the styles in men's clothes, and his Jewelry, was expensive and in the best of taste. In fact, for yeare he was known aa "The King of the Dudes." These facts were recalled the other day, when the State Appraisers filed their report on Gebhard's estate. There was no mention of any clothing upon which a tax could be placed, while the jewelry was only a watch valued at $50. a few pins, chains and shirt but tons, the entire lot being valued at $356. The report then goes on to say: "In reply to the question asked by the appraisers as to the absence of any mention of any wearing apparel, it is the fact that for some six months prior to the death of Mr. Gebhard he was ill and confined to his home, and for that reason did not require ' any great amount of wearing apparel, and the deponent is informed and believes that the executrix has come into the pos session of none since his death." lira. Mary Neilson. Gebhard's sister, gets the entire estate, which is valued at $163,721.10. Jerome's Brother Let Out. Incoming tourists will miss Colonel Lovell H. Jerome, who in the past has been the most prominent person on the revenue cutters that went down the bay to meet the liners. For the force at this port has been reorganized, and the genial brother of former District Attorney William Trav ers Jerome has been let out. Jerome was Uncle Sara's official "greeter." He was assigned to meet distinguished foreign visitors, to whom special courtesies were to be shown, and to look after the comfort of passen gers generally. Jerome was extremely popular and will be missed by the vet eran travelers, who always took their troubles to him. He is a West Point graduate, and for a time served in the Army, but has been connected with the customs service In various capacities since the late sixties. Grit True Element Essential to Success Persistence, Despite Obstacles. De velop. Character aad Brings At tal.aseat. Is Declared, aad Deeds Wltkowt Force Mean Failure. BY MADISOV JC. PETERS. PURE grit is that element of char acter which enables a man to clutch his aim with an Iron grip and keep the needle of . his purpose pointing to the star of his hope. Through sunshine and storm, through hurricane and tempest, through sleet and rain, with leaky ship, with a crew in mutiny, it perseveres: nothing but death can subdue it and it dies still struggling. Many men fail for want of force. They lack moral fiber. They have no driving power in tbeir engine. They fall in life's battle because their back bone is all pulp and their nature all pine. The men who have done things were very often men who had - no friends, no backing, nothing but pure grit and Invincible purpose to commend them. Jones Type Needed. The world wants men with a clear grit of Paul Jones, who, when surren der waa demanded, audaciously replied: "Surrender? I have Just begun to fight." Th. late John A. Johnson, of Min nesota, the most beloved Governor that state ever had, whose whole vllfe was Cured in Five Days : - ' e A. . U. Staaitk, M. D. SOB " FOR BLOOD POISON. 1- use Professor Ehrlich's won derful new discovery, " 06," in cases -of Specific Blood Poison. It cures in one treatment, and is the greatest marvel of medical solence. This new remedy has been successfully used in thou sands of cases. Let me explain it to you. an example of clear grit, after being defeated twice in his race for the State Senate, said. "I think I get along be cause It doesn't hurt me to get licked. I can chum with the man who beats me. There is nothing like knowing when not to quit." The world wants the kind of man that Theodore Roosevelt says he likes: "Who does not shrink back from tem porary defeat In life, but who comes up again and again." Sir Thomas Lipton once entered one of his many stores and. unknown to the new clerk, he was prevailed upon to buy a pound of Upton's cheese. Sir Thomas Insisted that be was merely looking around, but the persistent clerk would not be shaken oft and he talked so enthusiastically about this particu lar cheese that the owner of the store found the easiest way to get rid of the clerk was to pay for a pound of his own cheese. A little later that clerk was promoted. Never give up. Hold on a little longer. Holding on three days more discovered the New World. The world owes more to grit than to genius. Our 20th century civilization was wrought by men who would never surrender. Everybody believes in the man who hangs on. Grit Is Essential. The late Mrs. Craigie (John Oliver Hobbs), said: "That one secret of the American success is that if he does fail, he gets up with more determina tion than before and fights until he wins." In the assertion of your individual ity you can best Illustrate the purity of your grit. The world's great things have been accomplished by individuals who had grit. Vast social reforma tions have been born in individual hearts. Truths that now sway the world were first proclaimed by Indi viduals who were not afraid of being laughed at who dared to be' singular. Individual effort inspired by clear grit has been the mightiest agency for the purifying and uplifting of man. Lack of lofty courage, sublime moral heroism makes good men useless goody-goody s goody-goody that they are good for nothing. Be good for something. Stand for something. ' Be somebody. The man who runs with the crowd- counts for nothing. They are slaves who dare not be In the right with two or three. A Corner In Kats. Wilmington (Del.) Dispatch to New York Herald. Dr. Julian Oritz, bacteriologist and chemist, of this city, and husband of Mrs. Alice Oritz, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth B. du Pont, is buying all the rats and mice he can get in Wilming ton. He is experimenting on the rodents in furtherance of a theory that ' by forcing chemicals through the skin he can cure tuberculosis and other diseases, instead of giving medicine in ternally. , Dr. Oritz uaid that he would await the result of further experiments be fore announcing to the medical world what he has discovered. He forces chemicals through the skin by the use of electricity. He Is being aided by Dr. Pierre Drouchard, who recently ar rived here from France.
