F Cannon to Manufacture Mova ble Window Display Machine That Will SI iow Inanimate Goods Anlmalrly Will Employ 75. After working nine years on bia in vention. E. F. Cannon announces that he will soon start building; a factory on the East Side for the manufacture of an electrical movable window display ap paratus. ilr. Cannon owns 20 feet on East Alder street, with iO feet each on East Ninth and East Tenth and on a space (0x100 he will build a two-story and basement factory structure with foun dations and walls heavy enough so that two more stories can be added later when the business demands. The foundations and basement walls will be of concrete, and the super structure of frame mill construction. Work will begin. Mr. Cannon believes, about October IJ. All Summer filling has been going on both on the street and the lot where this factory will atand. This is nearly done now. and as soon as possible the building; will be put up. Ily the end of the year, Mr. Cannon announces he will be employ ing; 75 hands, and this number will be increased, he says, as the business de mands. The basement will be used as a stock room and from here the goods will be shipped. On the first floor will be the display room and the various exhibits that are demanded by the character of the article to be manufactured. The . factory Itself will be on the second floor. There will be little real manu facturing, for the various parts of the device to be made are boufcht from vi rious sources and t.ie work here will consist mostly In assembling; parts. The roof will present a novel appear ance, i for It will be of "saw-tooth" pat tern, so arranged that the north light will be caught and its rays distributed over the floor beneath. There will not be a better lighted building In the city than this, for windows encircle the sides of the structure, according- to the preliminary sketch made by Mr. Can non, set as closely together as they ran be. The entrance will be on East Ninth street. In a year and a half Mr. Cannon ex pects to build another factory on the east SO feet of his property on East Tenth street, for the manufacture of another device which he Is not yet ready to let the public know about He has been working on it for some years, he says, and has Just received his first patent. The present building will be put up with this in mind. The devices on which he Is now working are vague ly referred to by Mr. Cannon as lumber ing devices and he saws they have to do with the operations of logging. Four years ago Mr. Cannon first made application of the principle of the machine he had been building In his thoughts and since that time he has been continually at work improving it. To .this end he submitted specifications to various dry goods men with the re quest that they criticise and suggest faults and Improvements that might be made. Firms like B. Altman 4 Co.. John Wanamaker. Marshall Feld & Co and Lord Taylor, he says, freely gave their opinions and made such sug gestions as they thought would add to its usefulness, so that now he is ready to start the manufacture he knows what the trade requires. As to the field for the sale of this article. Mr. Cannon has estimated that In five years he ought to market 15.000 pieces to the retail trade of the Pacific Coast alone. Briefly this device 'a de Signed to display inanimate goods in an animate manner, along with auto matic explanations of the goods for sale. Electricity Is the motive power and the machine may be uaed both in window displays and in the Interior or a store. He received his first patent on it In Mar. 19S. another in May. 1910, and another has Just been received. Mr. Cannon Is a practical electrician, for he has been in the business 14 years In Portland. WINE FAMINEJS FEARED Bad Weather and Poor Grape Crop to Place Prices High. LONDON. Oct. i. (Special.) A wine famine faces the world, and the lover of the lighter French and German wines will have to pay considerably more for them m-lthtn the next week or so. There Is always great anxiety at this period as to the vintage of France and Oermany. Of those of Portugal and Spain the vintages are generally pretty sure, but In the case of the more northerly countries there Is always considerable doubt as to whether the grapes will ripen. Lst year, for example, even so late In the season, it was said and believed that there would be no Bordeaux wines, but by something like a miracle In the last fortnight of September there was a period of brilliant sun shine and warmth, the grapes, about which there had been so much anxiety, ripened, and some very high-class wines that are now making good prices were produced. The Germans were cute enough to secure the bulk of this vintage, offer ing such Inflated prices that the Eng lish w-ne merchants were beaten out of the field. This year, however, Ger man cuteness and enterprise will be of no avail. There are no grapes to ripen. As reports received recently from the wine fields have Indicated, the In cessant rains and cold winds have spread disease among the grapes, weakened as the vines have been by a succession of bad Summers, and nearly the entire crop is ruined. The position Is as bad as thts: From the Bordeaux country we shall have less than half the usual supply of clarets, as the wines here produced can be broadly described: from lower Burgundy there ' will be practically none at all: of the famous Chablls, beloved of the oyster epicure, there Is only about 100 hogs- beads to supply the whole world. Of what may be described as the grand, classical Burgundies, we only have an eighth of the usual supply. Lowt Klver Farmer to Irrigate. KLAMATH FA 1.1.3. Or.. Oct. . (Spe cial.)
