I5uiIdiiiK permits kept up the high average for the month when there were issued last week, permits numbering 147 and total ingr in amount $337,840. The larKe total of permits was brought about by no building1 costing over $40, 00, although there were numerous per mits granted for sums of $20,000 and over. The record for the month of April, 3S0!, now bids fair to be equalled this month, despite the fact that that month la the second largest In the history of Portland with a figure of more than Si, 600,000. Such a record with the month but half prone presages well for the monthly record and shows what Portland Is doing in the way of build ing. An Increase for the present month is now practically assured. The permits issued last week were as follows: Monday, 34 permits for a to tal of $77,875; Tuesday, 28 permits for ii total of $57,515; Wednesday, 24 per mits for a total of $35,510; Thursday, 20 permits for a total of $40,775; Friday, 21 permits for a total of $106,615; Sat urday, 14 permits for a total of $19,550. A transfer of South Portland property, which was negotiated last week, was for the Altamont apart ments at the southwest corner of Fifth and College street. This building is a new four-story brick build ing and was bought by J. H. James, of . the James Printing Company, from I. A. Peters for 50,000. The sale was negotiated through the agency of the A. H. Birrell Company. Mr. James will hold the cor ner as a permanent investment. Li pays 10 per cent at present on the purchase price. Rosalind Morris, a society girl, who was so badly burned by flaming- gasoline in an auto mobile collision that she can no longer wear a low-necked evening: gown, was awarded $20,000 damages of the $100, 000 she asked of the receivers of the Metropolitan Street Railway Company. Land Will Be Purchased to Add to SS2-Acre Farm Now Held by Government. For the purpose of increasing its farm, the Chemawa Indian School has taken an option on 101.74 acres just east of the school grounds, five miles north of Salem. The acreage is the R. P. Boise estate tract and the con sideration is $200 an acre. The option extends until July 2, or until Just after the opening of the next fiscal year. Inspector Mc Chosney was detailed to the school and reported the availability of the Boise tract, and on the last day the Indian bill was under consideration Senator Chamberlain Introduced an amendment for the purchase of the additional land and the bill has now been passed and signed. This Increases the holding of the Indian School to 442 acres. The land is to be used in connection with the In dian School farm. It consists of 80 acres of bottom land and 70 acres of upland, SO acres of which is timbered. This timber will be cut for firewood by the young Indians and made ready for the crops next Spring.
