Last Monday evening, prior to the fortnightly dancing club of the mar ried set. Major and Mrs. James Canby gave a small dinner party that In cluded Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howard, Sr.. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hart, Mr. and Mrs. Patterson Effinger, Morton Insley and Ralph Cunningham. Owing to an attack of lagrippe. Miss Lisa Wood has been confined to her residence, and was unable to appear as one of the babies at the County Fair. Mrs. John Plagemann, a recent bride, entertained with three tables of bridge on Thursday afternoon. She will also entertain the same number on Tues Bay. Mrs. G. O. Wold of Eugene, has come to Portland for the remainder of the Winter, and has taken apartments at the Ionian Court. e Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jenkins (Miss Belle Alnsworth'. have returned from their wedding trip through California and are at Miss Maud Alnsworth's residence on Portland Heights. While In San Francisco, they visited with Mrs. Percy Morgan, who will be re membered as Miss Daisy Alnsworth, who christened the battleship Oregon. Mrs. Rodney Glisan was the hostess at a small luncheon on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. J. Ernest Laldlaw en tertained informally Monday evening with three tables of bridge. S. Benson and Miss Carolyn Benson, have left for California for the rest of the Winter. Herbert W. Kerrigan, one of the contestants in the Grecian Olympic and for years athletically conspicuous here, visited lri Portland last week en route from the East to his present home In San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. Wells Gilbert have as their guests for a week Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Graff, the latter being a sister of Mr. Gilbert. On Thursday evening Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert entertained In formally at bridge for the visitors. An other Informal bridge will be given by Mrs. Gilbert for Mrs. Graff on Tues day afternoon. Mrs. Charles E. Boss entertained Fri day afternoon, this being the last of a series of informals which have been given In honor of Mrs. Katherine Daly's return from abroad. The Portland Kindergarton Club was organized at a most enjoyable gather ing of kindergartens at the People's Institute on Wednesday. . Nearly 50 were present and an attractive pro gramme was planned. Herman Burpee returned recent ly from Germany, where, with Mrs. Burpee and tha two children, he has resided on and off for the past five years. Mrs. Burpee, who was Miss Lucy Falling, arrived home about two months ago. During their five years' absence, one year was spent In Boston. Sixty-five guests were entertained at a Valentine party Monday evening at Stelnway Hall, which was given to the Musical Young Ladies Club by Mrs. Blanche Irbe Koefoed. An excellent musical programme was presented by the members of the olub. Miss Bertha Masters, planlste; Miss Leonora Greg ory, vlollnlste; Miss Harriet Johnson, Miss Gwendolyn Koefoed, who has a charming lyric soprano voice, and the Die Schonste Blume quartette. Mrs. Aaron Meier's birthday was celebrated on Saturday with Mrs. Julius L. Meier as hostess. The luncheon, which was followed by five tables of bridge, was a complete surprise to the honored guest. Table decorations were a profusion of the early Spring flow ers. At the luncheon were Mrs. Slg mund Frank, Mrs. I. N. Fleischner, Mrs. Edward Ehrman. Mrs. Adolphe Wolfe, Mrs. S. C Jeffords will be the host at a dinner dance tomorrow evening at the Golf Club in honor of the Fortnightly Dancing Club. Scott have gone to their cottage at Seaside for a brief stay. Mrs. Harlow Moore, a bride who was formerly Miss Margaret Cullen. of Swampscott, Mass., arrived last Sunday from the East. EVENTS OF THE "WEEK. Mr. and Mrs. David S. Stearns gave a reception Wednesday evening, Feb ruary 17, at their home, BB Belmont street, in honor of the 25th anniver sary of their marriage. The house was beautifully and tastefully deco rated for the occasion, the reception hall and living-room being In smllax and pink carnations. The guests were met at the door by Master Lloyd Stearns and Miss Clarice Churchill. Mrs. Stearns was assisted in receiving by Mrs. D. J. Russell and Mrs. B. R. Woodard, the latter having been Mrs. Stearns' bridesmaid. Music was furnished by an orches tra stationed in the hall. Punch was served In the cosy corner, Mrs. A. M. Niles and Mrs. W. E. Wilkinson pre siding. The dining-room, where dainty refreshments were served, was In charge of Mrs. Howard Crofts and Mrs. J. A. Crouch, assisted by the Misses Edith Stearns and Mildred Jackson.
