Now this year there seems to be more of -hlra than usual, which would Indi cate that the present holiday season is a prosperous one for the purveyors of presents. Everywhere In the shopping center there is hurrying, to and fro from early morning until the hotel dinner bell callg' the boarders to eat. Probably more auractive ankles' are to be seen on Petticoat Iane between 2 and S In the afternoon now than at any other time In the history of old Oregon. When one con siders the added attraction of the well dressed windows, he Is impelled to admit that this Is of a truth a blessed and a merry season. The proprietor of the big stores will tell you between gasps that this Is the busiest time they ever aaw and that they heartily approve of abolish ing religious lines at Christmas. Even the flower venders, who are somewhat crimped by the unprecedented 23 Faren hcit above, drive a profitable trade. The newsboys profit somewhat, for occas ionally a woman will indulge In the ex travagnnce of a paper Just 10 see where there la -ji "j-- to be axKiLuer chance to I ii- commit assault and battery at a notion counter. Santa Claus, the only one in town, so he must be the genuine old guy himself, is working for the Volunteers of America, a charitable and religious organization, which must be a branch of the Daughters of the Confederacy to. Judge by their gray uniforms. It's a positive delight to see buxom Mamma with three assorted sites, encouraging the little ones to grasp dear old Saint Nick's hand as he loiters on the corner and inquire for the rein deer, and then to observe the nonchalance with which Mrs. Mother brushes by with the kids and forgets to put anything in the receptacle set apart for subsidiary coin to be used for the poor and needy. The women are great for the spirit of Christmas, but, sad to relate, quite often somewhat shy on the substance. Santa Claus doesn't mind much, at that, for this whiskers and slelghbells stunt Is nuts for him. All the rest of the year he drives a fiery steed to a street -cleaning cart and picks up what he can find. It Is his an nual excursion Into toppy society. The Salvation Army is conspicuously in evidence on the streets, and many a no ble masculine soul stints his supply of Tom and Jerry in order tliat he may fur ther the good cause of free lunch and soft drinks for the Up-Agalnst-Its next Friday. Meanwhile, the preachers are polishing up their left-over platitudes to spring on their respective Sunday schools, which, by the way, have been playing to ca pacity for the past month.
