THE SUNDAY OREGOXIAX. PORTLAND. NOVEMBER 1, 190S. RELIGION IS VITAL Without It Morality Wanes, Says London Preacher. ADVOCATES ITS TEACHING Abnc of Such Instruction From Schools Deprecated Gosip of Men and Affair in World's Metropolis. BY ROPFRT FROPER1CX. mgwM LONDOX. Oct. SI. ( Special. If thr people of France afid of the United Ftates are among the moat immoral ln-th world." Kathcr Vaughan. the famous London preacher ia reported to have said in a apeech on education and morality last night. "I am con vinced it i because religion Is not taught In the public achoola of these countries. Tt Mood to reason continued Father Vaujrhan that moral education with out the aanctlon of religion waa only a fair weather theory. On must never forget that man as a moral being waa engaged In an al most perpetual warfare against a mob f passion arising within the realm of hfs being and an army of invading temptationa assailing him from with out. Human nature being what It was there was nothing to his think ing to make a growing youth alto gether hateful of wrong and desirous nf right, strong to resist and brave to achieve, but motives supplied by atrong religious convictions. The people of England had pro claimed that there could be no legiti mate divorce between morality and religion. It would be well for those contending for morality on a mere secular basts if they could be brought to recognize this before their political leaders had altogether "extinguished the lights In heaven." and silenced for ever the voice of conscience. Condemns Modern Newspaper. "The modern newspaper." said Sir Kunclman. president ot the Board of Education. In a speech at Newcastle the other night, "is doing more to kill rood English than any other agency 1 know of." Any politician who speaks 111 of the newspapers commits political suicide. For skill, speed and facility. of the pen the modern newspaper man ia mar velous, but so far as literary Influ ence goes the effect of the newspaper la positively pernicious. What can be more monstrous than to see the way in which English is garbled In the evening newspapers? Think of the garbage of the football edition. "You read such ill-placed slang as this: 'Here the custodian of the citadel received a nasty blow on the proboscis and the Invaders suc ceeded In transferring the sphere Into the Innermost recesses of the enclos ure." " I-ord Curion. of Kedleston. has been making very slow progress to recovery from his recent severe motor accident, but has gained sufficient strength to enable him to bear removal to Kedle ston. Derbyshire. ft will be some time before he is allowed to do any work. and he haa been obliged to can cel all engagements. Arbitration Court Formed. The Board of Trade standing Court rf Arbitration to consist of a chair man selected from a panel of unbiased men and one or two members each from panels of representative employ ers and men Is so far formed that the list of the chairmen will be published In a few days. Thirty In number, they are distin guished men of affaire, who have no connection with any industry, who have served as judges or have held Hgh administrative office under the Crown. Of the type for Instance of lvOrd .Tames, of Hereford. leadlng employera of all grades of political thought have consented to Join the second panel and the com plexion of the third may be gathered from the fact that Mr. Richard Bell. M. P.. of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Sen-ants, Is one of the me ru ber a knight Active In Retirement. Can a man who has been hard at work all his life enjoy himself by do ing nothing? Can any man enjoy him self by simply determining that he will? Sir Douglas Straight laughed frank ly when I put these questions to him yesterday. It is the Intention of Sir Iouglas to retire from the editorship of the Pall Mall (iazette next March, and he declares that he is finally re tiring from everything except from the task of trying to enjoy himself."
