The Eastern critics pro nounced this attraction oneTjf the sea son's best the very essence of musical comedy, extravag-anie, vaudeville, etc.. and stated it was fully equal to any of the past Broadway successes, "The Wizard of Ox," "'Babes in Toyland." and later "The Top o" the World. Practically the same big- cast that was seen last season, including the Elmore sisters and Charles A- Sellon, and a big bes,uty chorus. The Droductlon is new ana very elaborate. The bis; song hits, which are so whistly and airy, are "Lota from South Dakota," "Rosy Drums," "Modesty Restrains Me From Adding; More," "The Date Tree," "The Mermaids," '1 Wish I Were a Bailor," "Won't Tou Take a Ride With Me," and some 20 others. BELASCO PLAY AT BUNGALOW "Girl of the Golden West" Highest Royalty Play In Stock. The price Manager George I Baker was obliged to pay David Belasco for the privilege of first, offering that master producer's great Western drama, "The Girl of the Golden West," In this city would buy a comfortable home for some family. Negotiations began last April for both this play and Belasoo's "Rose of the Rancho," and were only closed in August. 'The Girl of the Golden West" will follow "A Gilded Fool" at the Bun galow. It Is the greatest of all West ern successes and Blanche Bates played It In New York to a record business for months and months. The Baker stock production will be a revelation and a surprise, exceeding; all previous triumphs of Portland's popular stock company. The sale -of seats for "The Girl of the Golden West" will open to morrow morning at 10 o'clock, and seats for the entire week will go on sale at that time. 6TROXG BILL FOR ORPHTXM Many Good Features on This Week's Programme. The bill at the Orpheum the past week was an excellent one and the house was packed nightly, the screams of laughter and outbursts of enthusiasm from the au diences were the best encouragement In the world to the performers behind the footlights. The coming week's bill Is va ried and unique, and will doubtless satisfy the most fastidious critic The headllner is Jesse I Lasky's "Mili tary Octet" and "The Girl With the Baton." a musical production, and lrf one of the costliest and most pretentious novelties In vaudeville. Beside a mechani cal staff of five. It requires the services of 11 trained musicians, and their tuneful numbers are beautifully Introduced In ap propriate settings and atmospheric scenes. In this production, as the title Implies, the scenes show army life, and three pic turesque .locales have been selected, one In Russia, one in India and one at home, until the offering really takes on the Im portance of a scenic spectacle. "The Four Rlanos" Is a name familiar to all Orpheum patrons as this agile quar tet are the most original, screamingly funny acrobatic sketch that has ever been seen in vaudeville. The name. It will be remembered. Is "In Africa" and Its action takes place in the interior of a tropical hotel In that locale. Its fun Is limitless. Two of the four Impersonate apes: the third Is professor interested In the Dar winian theory, and the fourth la an ec centric female sere van t- Julia Klngsley and her company offer in the sparkling comedy "Supper for Two." This little sketch deals with a so ciety lady and a young man who Is very much Infatuated with her but la very timid. The Jupiter Bros., cowboy Illusionists, do things that would mystify the Fays. They mystify and surprise you, and the performance is given a unique touch by the appearance of the brothers in the dress of the plains for they are Oklahoma cowboys. Mr. and Mrs. George A. Beane are pre senting "A Woman's Way." Mr. Beane will be remembered by many for his play ing In Hoyt's comedies a dozen years ago, and the reputation he then made. Miss Mabel Sinclair Is considered Eng land's foremost lady ventriloquist and she comes to the Orpheum circuit from the London Pavilion where she was ex ceedingly popular. The Three Dancing Mitchells, are colored entertainers, who have long been Identi fied with Black Pattl, Ernest Hogan and the Williams and Walker shows, and for ' characteristic dancing of their race they ' have few equals. TROCPE OF TRAINED MONKEYS -Special Matinees for Children at Pantages This Week. The highest priced acts In vaudeville are always to be found at Pantages. : That Is the cause of the tremendous patronage extended to this ' handsome , new theater. The accoustics are splen 1 did. Patrons can hear, see and enjoy I the performance from any seat In the f house. The booking agents who repre sent the Pantages circuit In New York, f London, Berlin and Parts are constantly ' on the lookout for all the best novelties 'in the vaudeville line. And for the coming week, commencing tomorrow with the matinee, there will be a particularly strong programme. Mile. Louise and her troupe of high school monkeys will be the headline attraction. This is another one of those extremely funny comedy acts that is always en Joyed by the old and the young. There will be special matinees given during the week for the little ones. For a special added attraction the management takes much pleasure in presenting "Ye Olde Home Choir." a troupe of sweet singers, who are well known in all the best East ern cities as one of the strongest singing acts In vaudeville. The great Lester Is a ventriloquist who can carry on a conversation with his dummies, sing, drink wine and smoke cigarettes all at the same time. His act is brimming over with comedy and Is a laugh from start to finish. Clemenso brothers are musical acrobats, clowns who can produce music from anything they lay their hands on. from an old gum boot to a tomato can. They finish their act with a side-splitting comedy acrobatic act. Miss Clara Walters, pre miere pianist danseuse, presents a rare novelty act, the only lady in the land that can dance well, sing well and play the piano all at the same time. Elliott Beamer will sing a new picture baritone solo and the blograph will present one of the very latest reels of animated pic tures direct . from the factory to Pan tages Theater. Today will be your last chance to see the present bill, which Is headed by the four musical Hodges, presenting a beau tiful spectacular musical novelty. The Pantages Theater gives three per formances dally. Doors open at t P. M., matinee starts promptly at 2:30 P. M. Evenings doors open promptly at 7 P. M. Vaudeville of a superior type will be found on this week's nroCTamme at ' the Grand and the . popular home of light amusement will present an exceptionally strong array of talent.- Sullivan & Con- sldlne have -booked another of those great shows that have made the Grand tamous. For the headline act "The Flip Mr. Flop" will be offered. This la a- clever farce. but the chief Interest will be in Its peo ple. Those appearing In the farce are Rube Welch, Kittle Francis and Kate Coyle. Mr. Welch was formerly a well known theatrical manager in Portland and Is noted as a comedian, Kittle Francis Is famed as a comedienne in her own pe culiar line. Miss Coyle was the girt who Introduced and made popular illustrated songs In Portland. All theatergoers will be pleased to welcome this trio back after an absence of several years. AIL Hunter and All will appear m an act which they style "Activity" because It Is so full of snap and excitement, xney are not still an Instant during their ap nearance on the stage. "A Lucky Liar" Is the name of the farce which Louis Chevalier & Co. will present. .This Is a playlet with a plot and teus or tne experi ences of a husband. It Is one of those do mestic farces which are always so amus ing and popular. ' Mile. Theo and her dandles have a sing ing and dancing specialty which is of high grade and sure to be found entertaining. In the way of Instrumental musical acts there are few equals to that of the Tog arally Brothers, who come to the Grand this week for the first time. Their success In the East indicates that they will be a strong card on the new bill. Sakata Is a Japanese foot Juggler. This Is one kind of acrobatics In which the Orientals excel. Sakata Is from the Royal Theater of Toklo. Fred. G. Bauer will render a new Illustrated ballad and there will be new pictures on the Grandiscope. Today will be the last performances of the current programme, which has a num ber of star acts, such as Frederick V. Bowers, the American tenor; Tom Moore, the champion "coon shouter." and J. K. Emmet. It Is a bill everyone Is praising. LAST TIME FOR ALLEN CURTIS Popular Musical Comedy Company Closes Season Tonight at Oaks. The last performance of the Justly popular Allen Curtis Stock Company, at The Oaks, will occur tonight, where "Jakey, Ikey and Mlkey," the opening bill of the engagement, will be repeated, by special request of many admirers. This splendid organization has certainly made good Its advance promises and Its en gagement at The Oaks has been one of the memorable events of the last few years In dramatic circles. Its principals and chorus. Including a corps of clever comedians, stunning lady principals and sprightly and talented chorus girls, are Individually and collectively Immensely popular here and their departure will cause genuine regret. Wherever the company goes It will be followed with the best wishes of the local public. The best performance It has ever given 'is that merry burlesque "Jakey, Ikey and Mlkey." which will close the season. It contains a number of delightful song hits and a world of comedy lines. It will be the best show In town tonight and you should be on hand to see the farewell. Louvre Grill Gets Singer. Angela May has been secured as a special attraction at the Louvre Grill. Fourth and Alder streets, opening to morrow night. The grill has been es pecially and artistically decorated and every detail for the pleasure and com fort of patrons carefully provided. Miss May has a beautiful contralto voice of great range and sweetness. Webber's Novelty Orchestra will present a spe cially prepared programme and a genu inely delightful musical season will be Inaugurated Monday night at the Louvre. One or the Other.
