Among; those entertaining for Miss Abott were Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Shaw, of ' Tennessee, "who occupied a box at the concert with Miss Abott's attractive twin sister. In another box was Mrs. H. D. Green, who, with the charming artist, formed a group of refugees in San Fran cisco who were domiciled at the resi dence of Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, on Pa cific avenue, during the disaster. Caruso was also, tor the time being, a. house gaest, as-was Walter Storey, the famous sculptor, who Is acting this year as Miss Abott's manager. Mr. Storey will be remembered for some of his beautiful works which are among the showpieces in San Francisco, notably the. statue of Saul. He Is the son of the renowned French sculptor and writer, W. W. Storey, who was Ambassa dor 4o Italy, at which time he was en-, tcrtained by Mrs. Green's cousins In Rome. - Miss Abott's concert gown, in which she.' afterwards appeared at the grill, wast; a stunning Parisian creation of a filmy silver net over a foundation of cloth of silver, and pailleted with sliver fleur de lis sequins. In her coiffure she wore a chic osprey with a diamond tiara, and some lovely jewels, a superb diamond necklace and a diamond-studded lorg nette chain. Her opera coat, or rather cape, was of black broadcloth lined with ermine, and a huge collar of the same fur. Miss Abott Is the fortunate pos sessor of a Blgned contract to appear withf Caruso for the next five years. An attractive matron, who has resided in Portland on and off for the past year, is Mrs. J. W. Matthes. whose husband was appointed last week Dutch Consul for V the territory comprising Oregon, Washington and Idaho, with Portland as headquarters. Mrs. Matthes was born In "Washington. D. C." and is the daughter of Admiral J. C. Beaumont, who had the honor of taking the first American moni tor across the Atlantic. She has traveled many times around the world and Is a charming linguist, as Is Mr. Matthes. who converse fluently In six languages. Mr. Matthes was at one time the Dutch Consul In Vienna. Hes now en route to Holland, where he will- visit his parents. Mrs. Matthes leaves this week to visit English friends at the Washington annex In Seattle during the reception of the fleet, when she Is to be entertained by her brother. Captain J. C. Beaumont, Jr.. who Is the Commander of the V. S. S. Geor gia. - Mrs. I Allen Lewis Is receiving many social courtesies In San Francisco, her former home, where, as Miss Kittle, she was a decided belle. Mr. Eliot Corbett is to attend his brother, and the ushers will be Hamil ton Corbett, Roderick Macleay, of Port land. William. B. Mouton, Jr.. Francis Peabody, Julian Peabody. Gardner Pea body, Gordon Parker, and Henry S. Parker, of New York, numbering many Harvard men of Mr. Corbett's class. McRae. m m The farewell bachelor dinner of Mr. Henry Ladd Corbett cm Friday even ing at the Hotel Portland was one of the most beautifully appointed of the year. The dinner was given in one of the hotel drawing rooms, which was metamorphosed into a perfect bower of yellow Scotch broom, with enormous vases of beautiful roses. Golden Gate, brides, bridesmaid, and flaming Jac quemenots, which were placed at in tervals around the room. Covers were laid for 20 at the large round table, the center-piece for which was a mini ature lake with swimming gold fish and surrounded by various greens, with playing fountains and tiny swans urns filled with lilies of the valley and Parma violets. Place cards were in the form of a traveling bag with an alleged picture of Mr. Corbett seat ed on a steamer trunk, with accom panying monogramed suit cases. Pres- ent were: J.
