THE presence of the famous diva,
"Miss Bessie Abott, of the Metro
politan Opera-House, who appeared
on Monday In a recital at the Heiltg, was
the occasion for sending many beautiful
flowers at her apartments at the Nor
ton la. Among; those entertaining for Miss
Abott were Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Shaw,
of ' Tennessee, "who occupied a box at the
concert with Miss Abott's attractive twin
sister. In another box was Mrs. H. D.
Green, who, with the charming artist,
formed a group of refugees in San Fran
cisco who were domiciled at the resi
dence of Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, on Pa
cific avenue, during the disaster. Caruso
was also, tor the time being, a. house
gaest, as-was Walter Storey, the famous
sculptor, who Is acting this year as Miss
Abott's manager.
Mr. Storey will be remembered for
some of his beautiful works which are
among the showpieces in San Francisco,
notably the. statue of Saul. He Is the son
of the renowned French sculptor and
writer, W. W. Storey, who was Ambassa
dor 4o Italy, at which time he was en-,
tcrtained by Mrs. Green's cousins In
Rome. -
Miss Abott's concert gown, in which
she.' afterwards appeared at the grill,
wast; a stunning Parisian creation of a
filmy silver net over a foundation of
cloth of silver, and pailleted with sliver
fleur de lis sequins. In her coiffure she
wore a chic osprey with a diamond tiara,
and some lovely jewels, a superb diamond
necklace and a diamond-studded lorg
nette chain. Her opera coat, or rather
cape, was of black broadcloth lined with
ermine, and a huge collar of the same
fur. Miss Abott Is the fortunate pos
sessor of a Blgned contract to appear
withf Caruso for the next five years.

T MAY seem strange that this firm, enjoying as it has the con
fidence and respect of the. Portland public for 25 years, should
decide to close out a lucrative business. However, such is
the case. There are some things in connection with this Closing-Out
Sale which in no manner concerns the general public.
The character of the stock carried by as is too well known to
need mention here. The sales prices will speak for themselves.
tor A. Metcalf, Secretary of the Navy.
At the latter .affair Mrs. Lewis was
Immensely admired In an Empire gown
of shimmering ivory satin and scar
let orchids. -

day from his European successes, and
his appearance this coming Friday at the
last of the series of Portland Symphony
concerts has created great enthusiasm.
During this past Winter Mr. Alexander,
while in England, France and Italy, at
tracted the most favorable and unusual
comments, his pure, clear tenor voice,
which will some day rank him among
the world's greatest artists, being doubl
attractive from the fact that he Invariably
plays his own accompaniments In
an inimitable and charming manner.
