OREGONIAN New Store With Little Prices Oregon Humane Society Does a Good Work Report of President Cake HeveaU Faet That Many C'anea of Cruelty to Antmnla Are Punished. TrflS following annual report of 11. M. Cake, president of the Oregon Hu mane Society, reveals the fact that many cases of cruelty to animals are Investi gated and punished. The Oregon Humane Society, which lias become one of the indip pen gable In stitutions of our city, was organized In 1S72, mainly through the efforts of W. T. Shanahan. who has been corresponding secretary during the period of 35years. The past year has been one of great use fulness. Many have been the calls upon our officers for help-, and much good has been done In relieving brute creatures from cruel treatment. An examination will show how urgent is the need of our existence as a society, as well as the prompt and effective manner in which that need has been met. And the work we have done by way of prevention is Incalculably greater than the relief di rectly afforded by actual Interference or by prosecution nnd punishment, yet we must continue to be watcntul and prompt to relieve, as well as to punish where the facts "justify it. For It Is by pun ishing one that we deter many others from oommtting the like offenses, and so F. P. YOUNG t All Ne Goods 7th and Washington Sts. For sap port the society has depended solely upon members and ctrUena, Our cor responding secretary, upon whom falls the burden of work, has served the so ciety during these many years without just compensation, and now that the work is constantly Increasing, we appeal to the humane people of our city to assist us in our work of protecting children and dumb animals from cruel treatment. "Since our last annual meeting oitr society has been called to mourn the de cease of our late prasident. Alfred F. Sears. Although much of his time was devoted to his officio! duties, he was deeply interested in the work of the so ciety and possessed a kindly and sympa thetic regard for the welfare of dumb creatures. "Our humane officer's report shows that 506 cases were reported and inves tigated during the past year. The fig ures showing the result of our labor give only the summary of the work ac complished; they cannot show the labor necessary to complete a case, and many times hours are spent and repeated trips by the officer -made before the results are obtained. Through the efforts of our society nine beautiful fountains, the gifts of generous citizens, are now being installed, and when completed will con fer a long-needed blessing upon both man and beast. The -society is greatly In need of an ambulance for the removal of disabled animals from our streets, and we trust the city will make the neces sary appropriation for this purpose. Many disabled horses have remained on the streets for hours, awaiting removal, and then tinder great difficulties.
