Report of President Cake HeveaU
Faet That Many C'anea of Cruelty

TrflS following annual report of 11. M.
Cake, president of the Oregon Hu

cases of cruelty to animals are Investi

The Oregon Humane Society, which

stitutions of our city, was organized In
1S72, mainly through the efforts of W. T.
Shanahan. who has been corresponding
secretary during the period of 35years.
The past year has been one of great use
fulness. Many have been the calls upon
our officers for help-, and much good has
been done In relieving brute creatures
from cruel treatment. An examination
will show how urgent is the need of our
existence as a society, as well as the
prompt and effective manner in which
that need has been met. And the work
we have done by way of prevention is
Incalculably greater than the relief di
rectly afforded by actual Interference or
by prosecution nnd punishment, yet we
must continue to be watcntul and prompt
to relieve, as well as to punish where
the facts "justify it. For It Is by pun
ishing one that we deter many others
from oommtting the like offenses, and so
