Card- well on "The First Fruits or the Land, or a brief history of early horticulture In Oregon. There is no one in Oregon, per haps, so well fitted to give a History of the state's horticulture, and Dr. Card well has not disappointed his readers in the complete paper he has prepared. He first reviews the great variety of native wild fruit found here by the pioneer set tlers, giving valuable details concerning the wild crabapple, plum, cherries, elder, grape, blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, currant, gooseberry, cranberry, barberry, salal, June berry, haw, and various nuts. The unusual size of the cultivated fruits in the early '60s and '60s is also com mented upon as indicative of the wonder ful soil and climate of this section. He adds a concise and thorough history of the various horticultural organizations of the state, he having been president of the Oregon Horticultural Society. No man in Oregon has taken a deeper Interest , In the development of the orchards of the state than Dr. Cardweil, and the high character of fruit for which this section is noted today is in a great measure due to his personal efforts in inciting a spirit of advancement and pride among the or chardlsts. Res idents of the East Side who have long been waiting for a bridge across Sulli van's Gulch on Grand avenue are highly elated over the prospect which promises them a structure suitable to their needs. That the bridge will be of steel is grat ifying to many who opposed a concrete bridge, but the fact that Its cost will be less than some of the former estimates is still more gratifying. The advocates of concrete are disappointed, although they are willing to concede that the city has saved nearly $25,000 in letting the contract for a steel structure. "Scotland in Sono and Story." The programme arranged for the concert to be given by Nannie Strachan, of Gald shlels, and Gavin Spence, of Edinburgh, at Arlon Hall on Wednesday, the 26th Inst., under the auspices of Clan Macleay, Is composed of the very best that could be selected and Is of such a varied char acter as to please all tastes. Special at tention is called to "Caller Herrin," in fisher costume, by Nannie Strachan, and the "Death of Doctor McClure," by Gavin Bpence, Concert to be followed by a dance, Everest's orchestra. The fill being but 60 feet wide at the top, it will be finished in much shorter time than was the Grand avenue fill, which is 80 feet wide. Father Lavin's First Mass.
