30 BATHING AND EXCURSIONS 1 - NEWPORT, Or., Aug. 18.-(Special.) Glorious days of brilliant sunshine are Btlll the order at this beautiful spot. A JIttlej rain last Sunday helped to lay the dust, although it dampened the enthusiasm of the hundreds of excursion ists who came in from the Valley tovns. The bathing during the -week has been de lightful, and the crowds seem to get larger and merrier every day. As the idle crowd stands around and makes sarcastic remarks '.as to the blueness of this or that fierson, or the shivery look of others, it makes one wish that some lrge wave would dash up and give them all a taste of the water that others enjoy so much. The arrival of the boat from Yaqulna Is still the great event of every day, and the landing and the street fronting It are almost impassable at this time. The mu sic of the band beguiles the waiting crowd, and keeps pilgrims from getting melancholy with the thoughts of home. Kvery morning sees the departure of large parties for the Big Trees. Otter Rock, Yaqulna Lighthouse. Seal Rocks and many other points of Interest. Campers are to be found In every available spot, and the darkness of the night is made picturesque by the gleam or the camp tires and the sounds of popular song and ballad. The places of worship are splen didly filled on Sundays, the Episcopal Church, overlooking Yaqulna Bay, being the Mecca for many visitors. The Roman Catholic Church is also open for mass. Many pleasant things are being said about the excellence of the muslcale pro gramme recently given bv Miss Susie Fennell Pipes, viollnlste; Miss Eva Stin- snn, soprano, and Frederick W. Goodrich, pianist and accompanist, at Irvin House, Nw Creek. The audience was a large and enthusiastic one, and every number was encored. Mrs. Pipes played for the first time since her return from Europe, where she studied two years under emi nent masters, and her work was splendid. It was also a real pleasure again to listen to -Miss Stinson, who has now recovered from her recent Illness, and her singing was charming.. Mr. Goodrich's piano numbers were all that could be desired, those of his own composition showing both beauty and originality. The pro gramme: Andante concerto in D (Vieux temps) and "Humoreskc" (Dvorak), Mrs. ripes; aria from ."Faust" (Gounod), with violin obllgato, song (Massenet), two In dian love lyrics Woodforde-Flnden). During the past week the crowd at the resorts here has changed considerably in personnel, although in numbers It re mains fairly constant. The railroad travel both to and from the beach is now " ' ' ' ,, .y.,. -o-.'w Y.;,.;-. . ,, : y " III I 3 ' A If II 1 I ' ' 'fll I ' ' A. .'' Last week's end brought one of the largest crowds ever seen in the history of the resort, and the present one bids fair to outrival it. If indications prove correct. The joyful enthusiasm of the new ar rivals and the expressions of regret from those departing for home, bear witness both to the native charm of the locality and to the great variety of amusement and recreation offered, while as yet the end of the season Is too far away to be even thought of. A large run of tomcod in the Necanlcum Creek last week has greatly added to the sport attainable, and large numbers have made fishing their chief occupajlon during the past few days. The social world, though rather quiet, has been far from dull, and numer ous little informal entertainments have enlivened the days for many who are thus energetically inclined. The height of the season is still on, and those who are anxious to avoid the smoke and suffoca tion of the crowded cities cannot do bet ter than to spend their time at the de lightful seashore while the unpleasant part of the Summer lasts. Ocean Side Park Gearhart. The work of Improving the park here is steadily going on. The most important event of the week was the concert given In Eagle Hall last Friday evening for the benedt of the Catholic Church. The entertainment was well patronized, and the programme of such pleasing character as to merit the repeated applause it received. The pro gramme consisted of vocal solos by Mfss Daisy Freeman and Miss Flora Flelsch ner, piano selections by Miss Ethel Gar dow and Miss Hazel Conrad, piano duet by M Loses Hattie Kopp and Alice Kear ney, mandolin solo by Ray Mann, and readings by Miss Agnes Manlnon. After the musical entertainment, the. floor was cleared of chairs, and dancing was In dulged in by the young folks until a late OREGONIAX, PORTLAND. ARE DIVERSIONS AT GOAST hour, while light refreshments were served by the ladles in charge. A party consisting of E. R. Eldridge, J. W. Chapman, R. H. Jenkins and E. T. Chase arrived at Seaside Thursday evening- after an extended horseback triD. Leaving Portland last Sunday, the party proceeded by rail to North Yamhill, where their horses had previously been sent. and the next morning made their way to Tillamook by way of the Trask River. The next two days were spent in a de- ligntrui trip to Netartls Beach, when the party returned to Tillamook and the following day started for Seaside. The most adventurous incident of the entire trip was experienced on this trip when they swam their horses across the Ne halem River, a short distance from- its mouth. This feat, though not without difficulties, was accomplished safely, and the party arrived s.fely without mishap. Their plans for the future are not yet known, but it is probable that a visit to North Beach will be made next week be fore the return home is undertaken. Miss Minnie Flelscher's 31th birthday was celebrated Wednesday by a drive to Ocean Side Park and north on the long stretch of beach. The party was com posed only of members of the family, all of whom enjoyed the trip to the utmost. On Tuesday Miss Ina. L. Craig was hostess at a very charming dinner given at the Hotel Moore for a number of her friends. The table was very prettily decorated -with red and white sweet peas. The guests werej Mrs. W. The guests of the Pacific Vlw, at Seaside, were entertained Wednesday evening; at the largest bonfire and en tertainment ever held on Seaside beach, given in honor of the departure of Mr. and Mrs. and Master Fred Wood, who are leaving for home, after a sojourn of six weeks. Mrs. Roblln acted as hostess, ably assisted by her sister. Mrs. -Woodward, and Mr. and Mrs. Belcher. The evening -was pleasantly spent in singing, and light refresh ments were served, and when the party broke up the last wish was that they would all meet In the same spot In 1907. The affair was well at tended by many of their numerous friends, who sang songs and told stories until refreshments served on the beach brought the evening to a happy conclusion. An informal "500" party occurred at the Seaside House last ' Wednesday evening, which was greatly enjoyed by those present.
