A. this afternoon, under the direction of the Salvation Army of this city. Adjutant Lnney will be In charge of the meeting, assisted by Major Walte. A regular old time Salvation meeting will be held. Fifty Salvationists will be present and take part with a brass band, a singing brigade and a male quartet.' After the meeting conducted by the Salvation Army, two groups will meet In separate rooms In the building for the discussion of topics of Interest to men. One of these groups will be conducted by C. ' M. Wood and will take up a life-problem topic. The other, under the leadership of A. M. Smith, will discuss the question whether a young man can get more pront from an hour spent in the country on Sunday afternoon, or an hour spent at the men's meeting at the Y. M. C. A. L Ferch, a returned Chinese mission ary, spoke . last evening In the First United Evangelical Church, East Tenth and Sherman streets, to a large congre gation, and told about affairs In China. Mr. Ferch spent a year in the heart of China with his wife, and acquired exten sive Information of affairs among that people. Mr. Ferch says that the boycott against American products has been en couraged and kept up by Japanese, who want to hold the Chinese market for their own. The Japanese own and oper ate newspapers In China and, encouraged the boycott. They send Japanese teach ers Into China. Regarding the danger -to missionaries and foreigners, Mr. Ferch said he saw no great menace. He said that there was a movement against the present dynasty, and if that . assumed strong proportions it might be dangerous for foreigners. Mr. Ferch expressed the opinion that China was gradually and surely responding, to modern ideas and in time would become a great nation in all respects. In connection with his lec ture Rev. Mr. Ferch showed a fine col lection of curios which he had gathered in the Orient, and which added much to the interest of his talk. Mat Remove Objection to Cut. Ob jection to the deep cut across the Penin sula between Northern Hill and St. Johns for the Portland & Seattle Railway Com pany, from the Columbia to the Willam ette Rivers, may be removed by the offer of the company to bridge the cut and build boulevards on either side. M. R. Thompson, right-of-way man, says the company will give 40-foot boulevards on each side of the cut and Improve them and will bridge the cut wherever a public road or street crosses It. The company has a right of way more than 200 feet wide and the cut will be a deep one. Residents at St. Johns and on the penin sula have been apprehensive that such a cut might be damaging to that section, and asked that a tunnel be made Instead of an open cut. Arrested for Serious Offense. Mrs. J. C. Wood acted as detective yesterday afternoon in order to catch P. W. Bhlrley, an employe of a local sewing machine agency, who. It is charged, has been in sulting small children and women on the East Side. After witnessing Shirley try ing to . entice her daughter and several other small children to accompany him. she followed the man until a policeman could be found, when she caused his ar rest. She signed a complaint against him In Municipal Court yesterday- afternoon. He will be tried on a .misdemeanor charge. . Accused of Larceny by BaHjEB. Will iam Geltlinger, an employe of a local mercantile firm, was arrested yesterday afternoon by Detectives Day and Carpen ter, on a charge of larceny by bailee. Oeitlinger is accused of purchasing a tUO diamond Btud, making a small payment on It, and then pawning the jewel. The complaint against Geltlinger was sworn out by Loftis Bros., Chicago jewelers. The accused man's employers put up 1250 for his appearance In court tomorrow. Shots Not Accounted For. Several shots were fired in the vicinity of East Burnslde and Thirteenth streets shortly after midnight yesterday morning that have not been accounted for. Residents living in that vicinity say they heard the shots, but did not Investigate. They also say they heard a scream following the first shot. Orange Discusses Suffrage. Woman suffrage came up for discussion yesterday afternoon before a meeting of the Lents Grange. Professor H. A. Darnall Bpoke against the proposed amendment, which was defended by J. C. McGrew. Mrs. Boyer, Mrs. L. H. Additon and others. Delegate to Supremb Lodge. Miss Mamie "W. Brlggs. of Arlington, Or., has been in the city this week on her way to Montreal, to attend the Supreme Lodge Degree of Honor. A. O. U. W., in June. "She is a delegate to that body from this state. Carl Cra mer, a sailor on the German ship Emilie, was severely crushed between two box cars at Northrup and North Front streets In the terminal yards last night The sailor, a German by birth, was on his way to his ship, which is lying at the Mersey dock. A long string of cars blocked his passage and he stepped be tween two. intending to climb over the coupler. He did not hear a warning shout from a switchman, and at that Instant a switch engine bumped one of the string and he was caught as in a vise. Cramer was conveyed by the patrol wagon to the Good Samaritan Hospital, where It was found that his hips were . badly crushed. The yards are extremely dark at this point. Children Left to Keep House. For two weeks two little girls, aged 12 and 11 years, have been keeping house all by themselves because their father has be come a radical prohibition Worker he's trying to safeguard the rest of humanity bv drinking ail the liquor himself. The girls are the daughters of J. E. Adcox, a Jeweler, who lives, at 411 Fourth street. Sergeant Baty heard the story yesterday and questioned Belle, one of the little girls, about the case. The children have been alone In the house since their par ent began his crusade, and the police are trying to find him that he may be re turned to his home. Churches Are Prosperous. Bishop H. B. Hartzler returned yesterday from his tour of ' the United Evangelical churches of Oregon, and will be in Port land today. He occupies the pulpit of the First United Evangelical ChurVh this morning and that of the Second Church In the evening. Bishop Hartzler spent the past moruh in visiting the churches, and found them generally prosperous. He spent one day at the Dallas college and familiarized himself with the wants of that institution. Favor Organic Union. Rev. E. Nelson Allen, pastor of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and O. M. Scott, who were appointed commissioners of the Portland Cumberland Presbytery to the general assembly, which meets in Deca tur, 111., May 17. will leave this evening. Both are strongly in favor of completing organic union with the mother church at this session of the general assembly, and will work to that end. Notice to 'Sprat Fruit Trees. Rich ard Dieeh, fruit Inspector for Multnomah County, has given owners of land between Portland and Milwaukie notice to spray their trees within the next 15 days. These orchards are badly diseased and danger ous to other orchards. "Irish" Morrison, one of the -county jail rockpile gang, broke one of his handcuffs and escaped from Guards Briggs and Burke last evening as the gang was coming ashore from the steamer which conveys the prisoners to the quarry at Linnton. Morrison's escape was not instantly no ticed In the confusion of landing, and he made good use of his start. Mor rison was serving a sentence for larceny committed at the Portland Restaurant.
