Sats Japan Encourages Boyoott. Rev.
A. L Ferch, a returned Chinese mission
ary, spoke . last evening In the First
United Evangelical Church, East Tenth
and Sherman streets, to a large congre
gation, and told about affairs In China.
Mr. Ferch spent a year in the heart of
China with his wife, and acquired exten
sive Information of affairs among that
people. Mr. Ferch says that the boycott
against American products has been en
couraged and kept up by Japanese, who
want to hold the Chinese market for
their own. The Japanese own and oper
ate newspapers In China and, encouraged
the boycott. They send Japanese teach
ers Into China. Regarding the danger -to
missionaries and foreigners, Mr. Ferch
said he saw no great menace. He said
that there was a movement against the
present dynasty, and if that . assumed
strong proportions it might be dangerous
for foreigners. Mr. Ferch expressed the
opinion that China was gradually and
surely responding, to modern ideas and
in time would become a great nation in
all respects. In connection with his lec
ture Rev. Mr. Ferch showed a fine col
lection of curios which he had gathered
in the Orient, and which added much to
the interest of his talk.
Mat Remove Objection to Cut. Ob
jection to the deep cut across the Penin
sula between Northern Hill and St. Johns
for the Portland & Seattle Railway Com
pany, from the Columbia to the Willam
ette Rivers, may be removed by the offer
of the company to bridge the cut and
build boulevards on either side. M. R.
Thompson, right-of-way man, says the
company will give 40-foot boulevards on
each side of the cut and Improve them
and will bridge the cut wherever a public
road or street crosses It. The company
has a right of way more than 200 feet
wide and the cut will be a deep one.
Residents at St. Johns and on the penin
sula have been apprehensive that such a
cut might be damaging to that section,
and asked that a tunnel be made Instead
of an open cut.
