THE SUNDAY OR EG ONI AX. PORTIiAND, DECEMBER 24, 1905. OVER $86,000,000 GIVEN TO CHARITY THIS YEAR And This Amount Includes Only the Gifts Which Got Into -the Newspapers. 40 nXE hundred and scventy-nlnc "dol- lars a mmutc: Tnat is tne-unns- tlan tribute paid by the year now passing, through each of its hours, night and day, to mankind's betterment and relief from suffering. The total Is astounding, unless one has followed the course of such annual -Tcports and so bccQmo somewhat accustomed to eighty Yin-urn li lnir CC 1Ai i 7" xvi. kin rauiuj sucu i una aic ucu-u u cssarlly incomplete. Much that is. 1given passes -without 'public notice -so," that even an estimate is out of the question. The Journalistic statistician 'must rcjy upon figures published from' fday to '.day, and must farther define- the limits of his work because of the un certainty of publication In one .paxt.oH the country of rifts Of small total-made in some, other "part, in the 'tables S50G0 lias been assumed as the mini mum to be oonfcldcred and. the multi plicity of 'small 'donations thus lost sight of . would ' certainly raise the year's total by $10,000,000. Individual givers, too, are here ac counted for -only, -which fact prevents the list from enrolling such a. magnifi cent charity, as tjiat which went out to the suffering .Russian Jew. With all "Ot- these limitations, how ever, the American -people, on this Christmas eve, with peace and good will ruling their land, may congratu late themselves that .their nation has given to good causes since January last came in, -at the rate of. an hourly average of $107,4 10j57. For Education, $58,303,000. Considerably more than.Jialf of the grand total has gone to the advance ment of education. Eighty-three col leges and schools are named in that part of the annual report, though, even so. lic gifts to this cause would not have stood in such overwhelming proportion to the benefactions of the whole twelve-month had not the four larg est donations of all fallen under this head. February saw $20,000,000 come anonymously to. the "Western Univer sity of Pennsylvania: in April Mr. Car negie set by $10,000,000 as a. fund for aged educators, .followed a month 3atr by Mr. Rockefeller with another $10,000,000 for the causa of general education; while the tragic death of Mrs. Iceland Stanford threw Into this same scale $4,875,000 more. The "baker's Joz"n" of most "lucky" universities rank then as follows: Western University of Pa. ...... .$20,000,000 I.eUnd Stanford University 4.S7S.000 Ifarvard University 1.500.000 "Sale University J.403.O00 Vnlverslt5 of Chicago 1.130.000 Vnlon Theological Seminary .... 1.100.000 -McCormlck Seminary 1.O0O.000 Mllllkln University 1.000.000 Columbia University CP9.000 l "Diversity of Virginia CI 0.000 "Hroivn tnlversJty 550.000 College of the State of New Jer sey (Princeton) 437,000 University or California 400,000 Good Names in a Good Cause. Among these glers to the training of ideas old and young are several of the country's mora prominent citizens. Senators Elkins and Aldrich have each given H0.0M to the Catholic Univer sity T. 1. Shunt, of the canal com mission, has given to Monmouth Uni versity, and Colonel "Jim" Guffey to the University of Virginia. Thirty thousand went to various educational works in the name of W. J. Bryan, and tlio will of Elizabeth Wheaton left tiie whole residue of her fortune to the seminary which bears her name. Is one also to consider as educational the bequest of $5000 by an anonymous Chl ragoan. who wished his money to be us-d to "explore th soul"? Following education, the benefactions of il05 rank as follows: To gnlleries. mu vrums and societies of kindred aims went $7.0:4.000: to "homes." hospitals and asv lums. S3.sni.500. with SUO0.175 to miscel laneous charities. Church works of var- v ions sorts followed close with $4.24737 and $1,333,000 for library buildings. Add to these totals $2,435,000. which vame in . gifts other than of cash, though valued "officially." and this country is found to have received in all XS4.0S,42: $2,015,000 was sent lo do its work In foreign fields. S21.2no.000 Bclilnd the "Jlccord." A study of these figures. In connection with the similar totals of the past live years, shows that 3005 has surpassed 1004 though it has not equaled earlier years: t falling, indeed, far behind 1001'a splendid "record." The- benefactions for these years, in round numbers, has been: 'JlT.r-OQ.OOO In 1100. $107,360,000 in 1801. $94- , 000,006 in 1002. with 1M3 beating that by -tan even million; only $C2.O00,O00 last vear and SSG.IOO.OOO this. In the second place, compare the gains and losses in the various divisions as shown by the figures of 04 and "03. There have been losses in the gifts to galleries and museums, in those made to church work and to miscellaneous charities, and nearly 5S.000.000 less has been sent abroad, but there have been gains in the benefactions made to hospitals and libraries, while the advance shown under the head of education .is of itself so im mense tltat the year's total rises more than $24,000,000 above that which 3004 could show. "Woman's Part in the Work. The detailed lists following show also that American womanhood is playing a "mighty part in this splendid work, and that no loss than 35 of the givers have equaled or surpassed the million mark among themselves giving mom than a half of the whole year's total. Four of these last are women, while MIfs Helen Gould, giving $700,000. and Mrs. F. F. Thompson but $50,(00 less, might well be included In the roster. Three other women who have generously helped the world's work are Mrs. T. F. Ran ($225,000), wife of the financier; Miss H. T. Gardiner ($300,000) and Mrs. Rtissell Sage ($75,000). - The "roll of honor." where one may rank the givers of millions, reads: Andrew CcrneRle . .$14.OPJ.O00 . ll.f.X.1.000 . . 4.0S3.OO0 :t,4r.o.ooo . . xooo.ooo . . 2.000.000 . . 1. 250.000 . . 1.050.000 i.o:s.ooo . . 1.000.000 . . l.OOO.OOO . . 1.000.000 j. l.OOO.OOO . . 1.000.000 John D. VBcfore you can gain any dofinltc knowl edge about a thing you have to measure R in terms of something else. So we call one man a grafter and that gives a cer tain' definite knowledge concerning him. About another we say he will give you a square deal, and that shows where he is placed in our minds. Society has been treated in this manner. We have the Golden Age of the poets when from all accounts everybody lived the idyllic life- They herded sheep, went barefooted and talked to each other in blank verse. This would hardly square up with life arotlad Prineville, but that Is about as near the truth as gets. poet ever) This is an example of a. confusing com parison, for .some people are liable to think "Golden Age" means something of the J. P. Morgan style, with everything merged and paying four per cent on the preferred stock. Then there was of course a -Silver Age; Bronze Age: Stone Age; Iron Age; in fact, society has been given a rather metallic effect by the poets. Right here and now we call It the age of steam or of electric ity or a host of others, including that of grafters. When we sit down and commence to fig ure out the progress man has made as he developed from the tadpole stage, we al ways do It In terms .that we are familiar ' with. The present marriagH status is likewise an example of thissame law. When an Australian Bushman got tired of "his wife, he chased her off into the bni3h with a club and then went out and rustled up a new one. The modern steel millionaire, when tired of a wife, gets a divorce and marries a ballet dancer the next day, which Is surely spiral evolution. But 1 believe that I was discussing standards, of measurement. Suppose you are trying to explain the progress of civi lization to a doctor. You stick your tongue in your chcek wink your other eye and casually remark that when a prominent citizen of ancient Greece had an attack of appendicitis, the doctor would go out In the barnyard, catch a rooster, wring his neck and then proceed to examine the rooster's insldes. It was always about a toss-up whether the patient was to get well or not. But it was undoubtedly tough on the rooster. How does It go now? Why, you get to feeling queer around the lower right-hand side of the abdomen and you are' forth with shipped oft to Portland. Then, in stead of cutting open a Plymouth Rock rooster and saving a great deal of trouble, they cut you open and look at your In sldes, with the result that your family sees something like this In the papers: "John Jones was operated on for appen dicitis yesterday. The operation was a success In every way, but Mr. Jones died late last evening. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made."
