BUFQRB IS COMING SHANAHAN'S SHANAHAN'S SHANAHAN'S SHANAHAN'S EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT THIS SALE 'Government Transport Sails From San Francisco. . THE $25,000 BANKRUPT STOCK OF THE CHICAGO STORE OF BLOOMINGTON, ILL., BOUGHT 1?Y OUR EASTERN BUYER FOR SPOT CASH AT DUE IN THE RIVER TOMORROW 12 Only One Bid Offered for. Steamer to Carry Lumber to Phi!lpplnes Prospects of Grain Movement. The United States transport Buford left San Francisco at 10:30 yesterday morning Xor Portland and Is due at Astoria some time tomorrow. She will carry 600 .ma rines from this city to the Philippines. The men are coming from the Bast, and will be on hand a few days before the steamer Is ready to salt The Buford will also carry between 800,000 and 1,000,000 feet of lumber, which will be furnished by the Eastern & "Western Lumber Company. Testerday was the time set for opening bids for a steamer to carry the remainder of the lumber, about 1,200,000 feet, to Ma nila. Only onevbid was presented, that of Taylor, Young & Co., who offered the turret steamship Inverness for $34,000. Her capacity Is In excess of the cargo offered, but It is not known what disposition will be made of the bid until authorities at "Washington, to whom Captain Baker referred the proposal, are heard from. LA BRUYERE ARRIVES. Overdue French Bark Had Stormy Time Coming Up. ASTORIA, Or.. Feb. 2a (Special.)-The three-masted French bark La Bruyere, which has been posted as overdue, and on which 15 per cent reinsurance has been quoted, arrived in this afternoon, 36 days from Port Los Angeles, with a partial general cargo onboard. When she passed the heads a report: was wired to this city that the barkjpfd lost her fore topgallant mast, 4&4jtv&9 feared that the vessel had xxh an accident outside the mouth (fiHv'lver during the recent gales, but the mSt was lost while rounding the Horn, before the La Bruyere touched at Port Los Angeles, and it was not replaced there. The trip up the coast, while an excep tionally long one, was without particular Incident, excepting hard luck and adverse winds. The bark left the California port January 15, and her chart shows that she was 30 miles off Newport February 1. Ad verse winds and strong gales were en countered and she. was driven north. On the 7th, 9th and 13th she was close in shore off Willapa Harbor, and on the 15th she "had been driven as far north as Cape Flattery. Since then she has been work ing her way back, until she arrived off the lightship this afternoon, was picked up by tho tug Wallula and towed inside. Cap tain St. Martin says he could have come in Fobruary 1, had the pilot-boat and tug been outside, but his chart shows he was off Newport at that time. Fully three-fourths of the bark's crew are French naval reserves, who are ex pecting orders to proceed home at once. CAPTAIN CHANGED HIS MIND. Decided Not to Sail Through the Draw Bridges. Tho barkentlnc Katie Fllcklnger has cleared for San Francisco with 550,000 feet of lumber. She finished loading at the Portland Lumber Company's mills several days ago, but will not leave down before Tuesday. The freshet in the river has de tained her. much to the exasperation of Captain Zantz. He had all his cargo aboard last Thursday and applied to the O. R. & N. Co. for a towboat, but the offi cials of that office declined to take him through the bridges with the strong cur rent running. The skipper waxed warm and threatened to sail through the bridges, which would certainly have been an in spiring sight, but on second thought his ardor seemed to have cooled. The O. R. & N. people gave him permission to charter outside boats and agreed to pick him up below the bridges and finish the towing Job, but after Captain Zantz watched the Llndauer maneuver stern foremost down through the Morrison-street draw and nearly wreck tho entire structure, he came to the conclusion that he would wait for the freshet to subside. Next Tuesday he will trust himself to one of the power ful O. R. & N. towboats. He cleared the barkentlne yesterday because tho Custom house will bo closed Monday. SPENCER AND IONE. Two Steamers May Work Together on Upper Columbia. Captain E. W. Spencer has completed arrangements for handling the business of the steamer: Charles R. Spencer at Hos ford's dock, at the foot of "Washington street, and it is understood that John A. Kincnld, tho agent for the Hosford boats, will serve In that capacity for the Spen cer. The Dalles boat will make a round trip daily and will not interfere with the landing of the lone at the same dock. It is believed on the waterfront that Cap tain Hosford will make an arrangement with Captain Spencer by" which the Charlos R. Spencer and the lone will work together, one. looking after the passenger and tho other the freight business. The Spencer will be out of the hands Qf the carpenters and ready for service by April 1. IKsputy Collector of Customs R. F. Barnes lias officially measured the Spencer and finds she Is 1S1 feet long. 31 feet beam and six feet depth of hold. Her gross ton nage Is 56S and her net tonnage 409. Thirty feet have been added to hor length. LOOKING FOR SHIPS. Advance In Wheat at Liverpool May Help Business Here. The advance In the wheat market to a rarity with Liverpool values will probably rtult In tho exporting of a few more car goes from this port. There is not rauoh wheat remaining in the country, but ex porters will probably be able to do some more business before the season closes. Rumors are current that figuring is under way for a ship or two for early loading, and It is also said that a ship will likely "be fixed in a few- days for a flour cargo. There is only one disengaged vessel In the port, the Thlst'ebank, and as she is too large for the latter business, some of the idle tonnage at San Francisco may be drawn upon. The latter port has still a fleet of SL276 tons idle, although the list Is steadily growing smaller by the removal of ships to more profitable shores. The latest fixture in this port was the Cro martyshire, which was taken by the Pa cific Export Lumber Company to load for South Africa. ALASKA STEAMERS IN DANGER Fierce Storm on Lynn Canal Causes Fear for AI-KI and Ramona. SEATTLE, Feb. 2a A special to the Post-Intelligencer from Skagway says: On February 1 a strong wind began blowing from the north at Skagway, and the next day the gale raged a the sum mit. The wind has not since subsided and there has heen a continuous storm raging on Lynn CanaL The Al-ICi left Juneau on the afternoon of February 17 for Skagway, and has not bcn heard from since.
