McCray arrived here Tuesday from San Francisco to re main several months. Miss Jessie Hale, of Grant's Pass, vis ited her aunt, Mrs. Jessio Farnsworth, several days this week. Mrs. Jessie Farnsworth left Saturday for Portland, where she will follow her profession as a trained nurse. Oregon has so far booked three dalecatos to the world's fourth Sunday School Convention, which Is to be held In Jeru salem. April 18, 10 and 20, 1004. Thee delegates are Miss Edna Allen, of Albany, and Miss Ella J. Buddemer and Mrs. "W. C. Puffer, of Portland. As delegates will have to pay their own expenses on this trip. It Is optional with Sunday school workers as to who shall go. So far, about COO delegates from oer 30 states, provinces, territories and republics in North America have booked to sail on the Xorth German Lloyd steamer Gros.er Kurfurst, which the executive committee has char tered especially for this cruise. The Grosser Kurfurst will leave New Yfirk March 8. and arrive In Jerusalem In time for the opening of the convention. The Itinerary includes Maderla, Gibraltar. Northern Africa, Malta, Greece, Turkey, Asia Minor, Syria, tho Holy Land, Egypt, Italy and the Riviera. There will be optional side trips to Damascus, Gallic-, the Dead Sea, Jordan, Jericho and many other points In Egypt, Sjrla and Palestine, which are rich in traditions of the Christian faith, and which will give the student of the New Testament substantal historical basis lor his belief. The first of these world's conventions was held in London, July 1, 1S50. About 330 delegates from America attended, and 15 countries throughout the world -were represented. The second, which was held in September, 1SU3, met at St. Louis, while the third. In 1S08, was hgain held in London, where 10 countries were represented. The selection of Jerusalem for a convention of thla character Is considered especially appropriate. Advanced methods, ot Biblical study emphasize the Imperative need of modern research, and a familiar knowledge of the scenes connected with the early history of the Christian church. The Oregon delegates are going armed with an Invitation to the convention to hold -the next, or fifth, one In Portland, and express a determination to succeed In securing It. The business part consisted in initiating six candidates: Mrs. A. Hubbs. Mrs. G. H. Hasklns. Mrs. C. R. Welch, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Welch, ana new w. F. Shields. After the busi ness of tho evening had been concluded, the. Invited guests were admitted. The programme consisted of vocal and instru mental solos and select reading. A pea nut race and a "quotation" guessing game wero features of the amueements of the evening. Dr. Woods Hutchinson, of Port land, was one of the guests and made a short talk. In which he expressed his ap preciation of the hospitality of the people of Southern Oregon. A very pretty wedding took place on Wednesday evening, October 28, at 8:30 o'clock at the home of the bride's par ents in West Medford, the contracting parties being Mr. J. A. Lamb, of Coqulllo City, and Miss Virginia A. Woodford, of this city. The bridal party entered tho parlors to the strain's of Lohengrin's wedding march, played by Miss Grace Amann, and took their positions under a canopy of Autumn leaves, Intermixed with purple grapes, where the ceremony was performed by Rev. H. C. Brown. The bride looked charming In a dress of white crepe de chine over white taffeta silk, and carried a bouquet of La France roses. Only relatives and immediate friends of both parties were present. Many beautiful and useful presents were received. The bride Is the second daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Woodford: also one of Medford's accomplished and society young ladles. The groom is a prosperous and popular young hardware merchant of Coquille. Mr. and Mrs. Lamb left Thursday morning for Coqulllo City, where they will be at home to their many friends here and at Coquille after .November L . Astoria. A. A. Miss Reba Hobson entertained the young ladles of tho Thursday Afternoon Club this week, at her home on Bond street A very pleasant "at home" was given by the Misses Bessie and Mary Gregory Tuesday afternoon, in honor of their guest Miss Ruby Rogers, of Portland. The afternoon was spent In games and music, the principal feature being a game of "cities," Miss Amy Rannells captur ing the first prize, while the consolation fell to Miss Winifred Hlggins. A reception was tendered Rev. W. S. Grim, the new pastor of the Methodist Church, on Exchange street and Mrs. Grim In the church, Thursday evening. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and following the exer cises refreshments were served. The ad dress of welcome was delivered by Rev. L. J. Trumbull, of tho Baptist Church, followed by a literary and musical pro gramme, including solos by Miss Alice Wood and Miss Sue Elmore, and a read ing by Mark Wolfe. Short addresses were also delivered by Revs. William Marcotte and S. M. Short s Baker Cfty. Miss Emltly Brenton Is visiting with friends and relatives at Sumpter. Miss Nellie Phillips, of Cornelius, Or., has returned home after a two months' visit with Mrs. Henry Browning of this city. The Woodmen of the World gave a dance at the Armory Wednesday evening, which was largely attended by the mem bers of tho order and their friends. The numerous friends of Miss Lucy Ed wards, of this city, will be pleased .to learn that she Is making splendid progress in her studies at one of the leading dramatic schools In Chicago. The second of the series of Knights of Pythias dances was given at Castle Hall Monday evening. It was well attended by the Knights and their ladles, besides a goodly number of society people outside of the order. It was the chief social event of the season so far. The Blue Mountain Literary Society met Monday evening at the residence of Judge and Mrs. Thomas Burke. It was a most delightful evening. Rev. Dr. Bell read a paper on the "Poems and Poets of America" and then submitted gracefully to the criticisms of his friends and neigh bors, which, owing to the skill and mod esty of the doctor in handling the subject, were In no sense severe. Smith, of Astoria, and Miss Elizabeth Aya, of this city, was solemnized Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at the Catholic parish house, "Rev. Father P. Beufgen officiating. The wedding was a quiet one, only a few of the friends and relatives of the bride being pretent Mr. and Mrs. Smith left on the afternoon train for Astoria, where they will live. They were '.accompanied to the depot by a number of their friends who sped them on their journey with well wishes. The bride Is the accom plished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Aya, and the groom Is a steady young man employed In the United States quar antine service at the mouth of the Co lumbia River. v Pendleton. Cranston have just moved Into the new house just built for them by C. B. Wade. The house is situated on Wade Hill, and is one of the prettiest new houses' in the city. McMinnville. Rev. H. L. Hodson left last 'week fori Seattle, whero she will spend a. few weeks visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Manning, of Salem, were in the city a few days this week. Mrs. Charles Grissen entertained the S. I. Club at her homo Thursday after noon. Mrs. C. F. Daniels spent a few days in Portland this week visiting her daughter, Mrs. Irwin. A very enjoyable party was given on Saturday evening at the home of Mrs. Edt Brldwell, in honor of her daughter Eden's 14th birthday.
