The fourth of a number of new switchboards for Are companies is being completed in the department rooms in thF basement of the City Hall by Elee trlclan Walker and his assistant, Mr. BrilL This board is Intended for the house of truck company No. 3 at Fourteenth and Glisan streets. It is handsomely framed In oak, with concealed wires, and will be quite an ornamen-t to the department. Three such, ooards have already been built one for hose company No. 2, one lor engine company No. 3, and one for engine company No. 6. The work on each was done almost entirely by the Are de partment officers. District. Engineer Hoi cen attended to the woodwork, and Messrs. "Walker and Brill made the bolts and laid tho wires. Each of the boards. if made by contract, would have cost the city about $75. As built, tho only expense lhas been for brass and woodwork which could not be done in the department, and that did not exceed 525 for each. Chief Campbell says these boards will be in stalled In the several houses when occa Blon requires, or whenever repairs to such houses must be made. So far they have been placed only in houses where a gen eral overhauling has been made. Two Boys Tour tub West. Two boys named Wilfred and Felix Reed have heen prominent figures on the streets for the past week. They are of a most inoulsl tive turn of mind, and their ingenious cu riosity has been a source of endless amusement to tho chronic Jester. In spite of their somewhat rustic garb and appear ance, they are intelligent observers. Yes terday morning they were to be seen walking up Morrison with full-sized cam eras and taking pictures of everything in Eight. They say they come from Boulder, Colo., and have worked in The Dalles. At present they are on their way to San Francisco, and are waiting till the Elder sails. They make no pretensions to being tourists. They were highly Insulted when It was Insinuated that they belonged to that tribe, and retorted that they "had a little meat on their heads yet." When due apologies were offered, Wilfred con descended to inform his questioner that they were out sightseeing and were bound to California, because they heard that there was lots to see in that country. "We are simply laborers," added Felix, "and we are bound to see the world. There's a 3ieap to see, and, by Jlmlny cripps, we calculate to see our share." Krebs, of Krebs Bros., who own i40 acres of the finest hopyard In the state at Brooks, Or., was in tho city yesterday. Mr. Krebs, "while here, arranged for a mammoth excursion for the benefit of hoppickers over tho Southern Pacific. He will be at the St Charles Hotel on Mon day, the 25th Inst., to sell tickets at 51 20 for the round trip. Krebr Bros, will run on excellent restaurant, where meals will be served for 15 cents. Hoppickers can have option of caiting at restaurant or of doing cooking in shacks on grounds. Krebs Bros.- have provided excellent camplilg grounds, with running water, and conveniently near grocery store and meat market, where goods will be sold at Port land prices. For the pleasure of the young folks, they have arranged for a dance every night during the season ex cept Sunday, beginning with a grand open ing ball on September 5, in the largest dancehall of the state. Music will be fur nished by the full Turner orchestra, of Oregon City. In the opportunities the hoppicklng season affords for a pleasant outing, with the chance to engage In light work at good wages, tho offer of Krebs Bros, will be taken advantage of by many families of Portland. Messenger Boys' Long Trip. Much, is said about the slowness of the messenger boys, but there are some who are truly faithful in the discharge of their duty. At a lato hour Friday night a long-distance call was received for A. Reynolds, whose address was said to be Cedar Mills. Russell IJams and Mose Chrlsner, of the Pacific Messenger Company, were sent out in quest of the man and told that the call was an urgent one, and that they must find him. They started out boldly, but in a short time lost their road In tho dark. This did not daunt them, and they continued to travel until nearly 2 o'clock in the morning, when they became ex hausted and built up a fire and lay down for a rest. After an hour's rest they con tinued their way. inquiring of every one that they saw. and about 5 o'clock yester day morning found their man. The boys showed much pluck In the discharge of their duty, and proved that thero are at least some of the messenger boys that are all right. Take Good Care of Sidewalk. The proprietors of the Oregon market, on Fourth street, near Morrison, take good care of their sidewalk these days. In front of their premises it Is 15 feet wide, and they cover fully 12 feet with crates of fruit and melons and boxes of all man ner of smelly things that go to make up the modern market-place. Thus the pub lic has a narrow path about three feet in width in which they are compelled to walk. It will be many years before the walk wlln wear out. If only three feet Is exposed at a time.. Against Hoyt-Street Improvement. A remonstrance against the improvement of Hoyt street from Sixth to Ninth street was filed with the City Auditor yester day. The only signer was tho Northern Pacific Terminal Company, and the docu ment gave no reason why the street should I not be Improved. It is understood, how ever, that the terminal company considers that portion of the. street in good condi tion, and that the taking up and the relay ing of the stone blocks, as petitioned for, would not be much of an improvement, Injured Child Improves. Little Con nie Fichtner, who was seriously Injured In a peculiar accident at Lonsr Beach. Is re. ported to be getting along nicely. . Ex amination showed that she had sustained no Internal Injuries from being crushed under the log apart from a fracture of the thigh, which was reduced yesterday. Dnnl vray Visit Portland. After a year In Europe, Professor and Mrs. Clyde A. Dunlway have returned to Portland, and will remain here a short time before leaving for Palo Alto, Cal., where Professor Dunlway will resume his duties as a member of the faculty of Stan ford University. While in Portland they will be at the home of Professor Dunl way's mother. Mrs, A. S. Dunlway, at Tenth and Manket streets. x Professor Dunlway speaks entertainingly of his Eastern and European trip. After passing some weeks in the Atlantic cities, he 'and Mrs. Dunlway visited Ireland and England. The Winter was devoted to uni versity work in Lelpsic and Berlin. In the Spring they made a trip through Italy and Switzerland, and later they went to the Sorbonne University, at Paris, where an official congress, containing representa tives of all the learned societies of the country is held each Easter. The univer sities of Oxford, Halle and Heldelburg also were visited. Of Heldelburg, Professor Dunlway says that for advanced research, for work In the laboratories and seml .narles, the student's stay in Germany Is entirely satisfactory, but in college In struction the German universities are sad ly deficient. At the close of the university year much time was- passed in the libraries of German cities and in the archives of Paris. In Lelpsic and Berlin Professor Dunl way met a large number of American stu dents, who aro doing very creditable work. In Lelpsic there is an American club where the American students and a few English friends give a dinner every month. Although Professor and Mrs. Dunlway greatly enjoyed their trip, they are glaa to see again the Pacific Coast and to be in Portland. Victim of Tuberculosis. NEW YORK. Aug. 16.-Dr. E. H. Scho- flcld has fallen a victim to his Investiga tions at Yale Into tuberculosis, says a New Haven special to the Press. When in tho medical school he made a special study of the disease," and was sent to Denver al most on the eve of his graduation, suffer ing from the disease, which he had con-' tracted .from, his patients, His condition Improved (here, and he completed his studies in the medical college In that city.
