V 20 ,THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, AUGUST 10, 1902. - - - . v - The rush to the teaches steadily In creases, with, no signs of cessation. Every train and boat is literally packed with vacation-seekers, and will be until about August 15 The middle of August has always seen the high-water mark of sea fide travel, after which, slowly increas ing, comes- the ebb. The present season Is much further advanced than was last season at the same tlmo, and is especi ally favored with beautiful weather. Last year at this-time, and all through August, rain fell repeatedly. The weather this season at the seacoast is fitly described as "perfect," while nothing happens in the Interior to Interrupt the hot weather that sends crowds to inhale the bracing sea air. Hotel trade at the beaches this year, and during the last few years, is not what it was six or seven years ago. The arrivals consist principally of peo ple from Boise. Walla Walla, Spokane and Seattle, while Portland people oc cupy cottages or "hang out" a few days at private boarding-houses. This Is es pecially so at Long Beach, where "tran sient trade" are the words ever in the mouth of the hotel-keeper. Fog every morning lies low over the land along Long Beach. This fog Is strictly a late Summer and Fall feature, and if nothing else betokens the advance ment of the season, the fog does. To see a fog come in from the ocean one must be an early riser. At 5 o'clock the sun has risen in a clear sky. Soon far out to sea a low bank of clouds close to the water is seen approaching, blown swiftly on by the steady wind. Little by little the sun is obscured: then everything Is enveloped In the cold gray vapor that strikes one's face like rain. Sometimes the fog hangs over the land until noon, but usually by 8 it is blown away or disappears before the sun as quickly as it came. GOOD TIMES AT FLAVEL. Abundant Entertainment Provided for All Guests. The continued hot weather has made the hotel proprietors of the coast resorts ju bilant, and at no time is there greater cause for this kind of Joy than at Flavel. At this beautiful and most commodious hotel the prices were put down especially low this year, and the consequence was that the hotel filled upt the very be ginning of the season, an'd there is a large crowd of delighted pleasure-makers at Flavel now, and prospects that the fun will continue throughout the Summer. The various provisions for sport, sea bathing, tennis, golf, bowling, horseback riding, fishing, etc, have been liberally In dulged In, and everybody seems to bo enjoying himself, or herself, to the limit They do not envy their relatives swelter ing In town, and express the Inclination to stay among the salt breezes until the hotel closes for the Autumn. Dancing is Indulged in every evening, and a special nop neld every Saturday night, when a string orchestra is provided. Especially fortunate are the guests at Flavel in the matter of culinary arrangements, for it is admitted by everybody that Mra Mitch ell sets the best table at the coast this year. Aside from this, of course, It is known that the. dining-room in the Hotel Flavel is the most commodious and com pletely equipped dining-room at tho coast. Following Is a list of guests now at Flavel: Mrs. Miles C. Moore. Miss Lernman. Walla Walla; Mrs. G. W. Hoyt, Mr. and Mrs. It. W. Lewis and num. Miss Ray mond, Portland; C. W. ON THE NORTH SIDE, One Great Amusement Is Found at the BoTrllngr Alleys. At Sea View and Long Beach new faces have appeared, and familiar ones gone. The bowling alleys are centers of attraction. Hero are discussed the top ics of the day. This is especially so of Stout's bowling alley, at Sea View, run by Johnnie Fisher. Tho four alleys are kept running early and late. Everybody bowls at the beach, old men and children. Many bring down horses and rigs to Long Beach. Few private individuals have horse and buggy at Seaside, and the Oregon beaches, because of the diffi culty of" transporting them. Through transportation on the Potter permits peo ple to land horses at the Ilwaco dock without trouble, while those on the Ore gon beach wishing rigs have to drive from Astoria or Skipanon to Seaside, a distance-of 18 miles, after bringing them by boat from Portland to Astoria. The wreckage of a fisherman's scow drifted up on Long Beach. Apposite Sea View, Wednesday night. Evidences such as this of. the storm two weeks ago oc casionally drift ashore at Long Beach. Thursday morning a seine was discov ered on! Long Beach. The Tinker boys, knowing the value of such a thing when found, followed It as It drifted as far as Sea View, where It came ashore. , Nine sturgeon and seven salmon, and a num ber of crabs, all alive, were found on tangled in Its meshes. The salmon were sold upon the spot, and the net was hauled away by the Tinker boys, xvho netted a neat sum for their effort. Many are the gontle controversies among the fair sex at Long Beach over the one side-saddle of the beach. But since "necessity is the mother of Inven tion," an alternative of riding astrido Is presented and is much In vogue. Bathing in front of Sea View was somewhat hindered by large crab holes. and many for this reason did not take their dally dip in the tide. On Tuesday ana Wednesday many crabs were caught. A northwest wind combined with an exceptionally high tide always brings crabs for tho getting. A party of 25 Sea View people made an excursion to Fort Canby, Thursday. From Fort Canby they made their way to North Head, by way of Ilwaco. Lunch was carried by the willing gentlemen of the crowd, while kodaks in tho hands of the ladles snapped pictures. An exciting bowling contest took place at Long Beach Monday evening, August 4. between Sea View and Long Beach, The sides were as follows: Sea View E. Sheridan, J. Fisher, Daisy Botefuhr. Horace Stiles, Professor Epp- lng (star player). Long Beach Draper, Dunn, Schmeer, Mrs. Fenny. Mr. Penny, ParrotL Four games wore played, out of which Sea View won three. Long Beach won the first game, the score being 228 to Sea View 17L The second game was Won by Sea View, scoring 171 to Long Beach ICC The third game was won by Sea View, making a score of 191, Long Beach 170. Tho last game waH also won by Sea view; score 20s, Long Beach 173. Draper, a star player, of Long Beach. generally makes an average of 40. Game was called at 9:10. Johnnie Everest's 11th year at Long Beach as promoter of dances is even more popular than formerly. tti own orchestra furnishes music at the dances, held regularly Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. The floor of his hall is an admirable one for the beach," al though the bulldln; Is old. At Mrs. Joseph H. Penny's cottage, at Long Beach, last Wednesday afternoon, was given a tea in honor of her guests. Mr. and Mrs. H. Scott, of Seattle. It was a tea lacking somewhat In conven tion, and bordering on an afternoon din ner. Those present were: Miss Edyth Hayxtack Neoly, Mr. Kroenberg, Mrs. George Ved der, and Mrs. Charles Fcrneau. A concert by Everest's orchestra was given In 'the open air to an interested crowd, last Sunday afternoon, at Long Beach proper. Tho expense of engaging Everest's orchestra was defrayed by a liberal public contribution. There Is con templated a similar concert for this Sun day. If tho necessary money can be raised. At Sed View. As usual there were several social func tions at. the Hackney cottage during the past week. Thursday week a pleasurablo evening- was spent in an Informal mu- slcale. The house was turned over, the guests entertaining themselves most en- Joj'cbly. The programme was as follows: Piano selection. Miss Hagner; Sloane Hachney, In his vocal stand-by; violin solo. Gus Pfunder; selection by the trio, Hach- ney, Stllea Stone; piano solo Miss Bote fuhr; piano selection. Miss Hagner; piano preferment. Miss Marsh; violin solo, Daisy Botefuhl; solo, Stuart McGulre. On Friday night followed a dance that was -greatly enjoyed. A roaring bonfire was the entertainment enjoyed by the guests -at Mrs. Hackney's last Tuesday. In size nothing of tho kind could com pare with it this year. A Jolly round of fun describes the pleasure about the fire. while Its fame has made a date In the an nals of social activity at Sea View. State University students from Portland, ar rived Thursday afternoon over the Tilla mook Head trail, after a month of rough travel afoot. 290 miles from Eugens to the Sluslaw, and up the Oregon coast. They report beautiful weather and a splendid time, through a country full of fine scenery. The trip was not especially exciting, though such incidents as raft ing packs across the Salmon River, Dolph's swimming Nehalem Bay at half ebb tide, and rounding Xecahnie Mountain by the trail seem pretty tough at first. Still afoot, they left next day for Port land, and contemplae a similar extended trip toward Mount Hood and bade to Eu gene yet this Summer. The hop at Locksley Hall last Wednes day evening was the success of the sea son. Tiny Chinese lanterns shed their pale light upon the merry dancers as they spun about on the large veranda. whLe tha melodious notes of Parsons' Orches tra, hidden from view in a neat bower, floated clear and distinct in the still night air. Refreshments were served In tho Turkish room, and when the gucst3 began to depart many were the regret that tho evening had not been longer. As the result of the recent scare at Gearhart Park the hotel management has put up a lifeline at the place of bathing. This lifelino Is the only one on the Oregon beach, and Mr Schulderman has set an example that ought to be fol lowed at all tho centers of bathing on the coast. H. F. Parsons and Messrs Fowler and. Hufford returned Wednesday to Seaside from a Ashing trip up the Necanlcum. They went beyond the run of salmon trout so that their catch consisted prin cipally of brook and mountain trout. Among tho three of them some 100 fish were landed. At the New Grimes. S. C. Driggs, Dr. and Mrs. Dav. Raf fety. Miss Imogene Raffety. Harry L. Raffety, Mrs. E. C. Clement and two children. Charles B.
