By molding and grad- uating students educated in all skin types, we increase the number of estheticians that can confidently service all of Port- land’s population. It starts with this program, but my hope is to eventually influence a set a stan- dard for the curriculum require- ments statewide, and nationally. It should be a requirement that students know how to consult service and educate clients of all skin types in the field of esthet- ics.” says Amantha Hood. The 28-week curriculum sat- isfies the need to educate stu- dents beyond Fitzpatrick skin scale 1-3. The 3-day per week program covers sugaring, wax- ing, facials, use of facial devic- es, chemical peels, dermaplan- ing, lash tint, lift and extensions, brow tint and laminations. First African Methodist Epis- copal (AME) Zion Church is the oldest Black Church in the Pacific Northwest. The church was organized in 1862; just 3 years after Oregon became a state. This historic church has been a staple in the communi- ty. This year is 161 years of the church’s existence. Our roots in the community are deep. The church has been a beacon of light in the community for many years and is the miracle on the corner of N. Vancouver Avenue and N. Skidmore Street. First AME Zion Church has been outspoken in the fight for equal rights and the needs of the community. Under the leadership and vi- sion of the current Pastor, Rev. Dr. Dennis G. Payne, II, First AME Zion Church is experienc- ing a “new birth”. The church is looking to the future. This church isn’t going anywhere. Through a partnership with Logos Faith Development, a redevelopment plan is in process. This plan will encompass the needs of both the community and the church. The plan is to have a mixed-use fa- cility with a childhood education component and a before and af- ter school tutoring program with breakfast and a hot lunch. Un- derground parking will be avail- able. There will also be some form of mixed one-bedroom and two-bedroom housing units in- cluded in the plan. First AME Zion Church is determined to continue with its community ministry and to con- tinue to be a visible beacon of light in the Portland Community.
