I don’t think I’ve ever left a history play with so much to chew on. “Timon of Athens” takes an entirely different approach to one of Shakespeare’s least performed plays, but also succeeds of find- ing real richness in difficult mate- rial. The play involves a wealthy Athenian who lavishes literally obscene generosity on every sy- cophant who grabs for his atten- tion, quite deliberatively heedless of the limits of his own resources, sure that he is amassing friends who will insulate him from any possibility of want or suffering. He gorges on his own generosity, ignoring warnings from his faith- ful steward and a misanthropic philosopher that the reciproca- tion will not be there to save him. In the second half to the play, it turns out the warnings were cor- rect. Destitute and abandoned by those he considered friends, Timon becomes as self-indulgent a misanthrope as he was a philan- thropist. The play is really a fable, and it is hard to imagine a more effective container than the one that direc- tor Amanda Dehnhert has devised. The aesthetic is Brechtian, and the design and music draw from a va- riety of time periods (Weimar Ger- many, Goth musicians, the Great Depression). Music especially carries the play to the dark places it most needs to go without feeling heavy-handed. And the cast is all in, gamely serving a difficult play that confronts us with humanity’s shadow. As the title character, Anthony Heald gives an especially gener- ous performance as an essentially selfish man. Timon fancies him- self a philanthropist, but actually is giving to himself, in a way that is more common than we may want to admit. He is not offering his wealth to the poor, but rather to those he thinks have the most to offer him. He is a benefactor to artists and to people of means or at least potential means. His expec- tations are not merely naive but, rather, self-serving. Both plays run until the end of October.
