Saturday ’ s protest in Portland brought traffic to a standstill, with participants blocking streets with a staged “die in.” Officers in riot gear corralled the protest later and 10 arrests ensued. Of ficials say some bottles were thrown at officers and a police car was damaged. On Sunday, Jackson attended a morning service at Emmanuel Temple, a historically black con gregation in north Portland, and urged congregants to keep fight ing for racial justice. He also called on President Barack Obama and others in Congress to go to Ferguson and look at how racism has rotted the confidence of the judicial system. "It's discouraging sometimes, but we shouldn't give up," Jack- son said. "We have won so many battles." The aw areness o f the events in Ferguson had a national au dience Sunday as five players o f the St. Louis Rams cam e onto the field for a NFL gam e against the O akland Raiders in St. Louis with their hands up in solidarity. Workers and students across the country also walked out with their hands up across the nation during protests on Monday. At the University of Missouri- St. Louis, near Ferguson, 30 stu dents walked out of their class rooms chanting “Hands up, don’t shoot!’ People across the coun try have been chanting the same rallying cry, and in Portland, M onday afternoon, the cries were heard again and again in front of City Hall. Don’t Shoot Portland, a group started by a mixture of activists and Portland State University students, is set to continue host ing marches and rallies through out the week. Across the country, similar activists have vowed to keep up the protests and bring pressure on Attorney General Eric Holder to file federal charges in Brown’s death. Portland’s next rally through D on’t Shoot is set to be in Gresham on Wednesday night from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with an exact location to be an nounced.
