Jackson spoke o f his vision
for justice for the African Ameri
can community and mentioned
the progress he felt he had seen
in his lifetime. Jackson also
urged the United States to fol
low through on a federal investi
gation o f B ro w n ’s death in
Ferguson and further hold W il
son accountable.
Saturday ’ s protest in Portland
brought traffic to a standstill,
with participants blocking streets
with a staged “die in.” Officers
in riot gear corralled the protest
later and 10 arrests ensued. Of
ficials say some bottles were
thrown at officers and a police
car was damaged.
On Sunday, Jackson attended
a morning service at Emmanuel
Temple, a historically black con
gregation in north Portland, and
urged congregants to keep fight
ing for racial justice.
He criticized the grand jury
that decided not to indict the
Ferguson police officer while
taking aim at other systemic and
national racial disparities, includ-

When twelve-year-old Devonte Hart (center) joined other family members to offer free
hugs during a protest Saturday against the justice system in the wake of the events
in Ferguson, Mo., he drew a conversation from a Portland Police officer who then
took him up on the offer with an embrace. The gesture was captured in a photo that
went viral on media outlets across the country.
ing the lack of people of color on
the boards of high-tech com pa
nies, like Apple, Intel, Microsoft,
Google and Amazon.
He also called on President
Barack Obama and others in
Congress to go to Ferguson and
look at how racism has rotted
the confidence of the judicial
system.
"It's discouraging sometimes,
but we shouldn't give up," Jack-
son said. "We have won so many
battles."
The aw areness o f the events
in Ferguson had a national au
dience Sunday as five players
o f the St. Louis Rams cam e
onto the field for a NFL gam e
against the O akland Raiders in
St. Louis with their hands up in
solidarity.
Workers and students across
the country also walked out with
their hands up across the nation
during protests on Monday.
At the University of Missouri-
St. Louis, near Ferguson, 30 stu
dents walked out of their class
rooms chanting “Hands up, don’t
shoot!’ People across the coun
try have been chanting the same
rallying cry, and in Portland,
M onday afternoon, the cries
were heard again and again in
front of City Hall.
Don’t Shoot Portland, a group
started by a mixture of activists
and Portland State University
students, is set to continue host
ing marches and rallies through
out the week.
Across the country, similar
activists have vowed to keep up
the protests and bring pressure
on Attorney General Eric Holder
to file federal charges in Brown’s
death.
Portland’s next rally through
D on’t Shoot is set to be in
Gresham on Wednesday night
from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with
an exact location to be an
nounced.
