Mayor Hales immediately names O’Dea to lead force J O IN US AT A C O M M U N IT Y F O R U M : Portland Police Chief Mike Reese announced Tuesday his plans to retire from the Portland Police Bu reau at the end of the year. MayorCharlie Hales immediately named Reese's replacement: Assis tant Chief Larry O'Dea, a member of the Portland Police force since 1986. Reese, a graduate of Roosevelt High School, joined the bureau in 1994 as a sergeant. During his ten ure as chief he oversaw a boost in diversity in officers and new train ing procedures and discipline guide lines within the department. Daimler accused of racial harassment and failure to take action Oregon ’ s labor commissioner has filed a complaint against heavy-duty truck and school bus manufac turer Daimler Trucks North America, alleging five employees at its north Portland plant were subjected to racial slurs and threats. A statement last week from Commissioner Brad Avakian says the accusations will be investigated, and if they bear out, workers could be awarded dam ages including back pay if they’ve quit. Among the allegations is that a Daimler Trucks employee threatened a black co-worker with a noose, saying he’d drag the African-American behind a car, the statement said. I The Weekin Review 30 Years for Bomb Plot A young Somali American was sen tenced last week to 30 years in prison for plotting to detonate a bomb in Portland's downtown square while 10,000revelers gathered to watch the lighting of a Christ mas tree. Prosecutors had sought a 40-year term for Mohamed Mohamud, 23, in the 2010 plot that actually was an FBI sting. But the judge said Mohamud's youth and remorse for his actions helped lower his sentence. Gresham to Hire Extra Police The City of Gresham was awarded a $250,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Justice last week, creating funds that will be used to hire two roving school officers, one focused on gang issues, another focused on truancy. The accident also killed Steve Fritz, the husband of Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz. Fairchild was married to Jim Fairchild, a Avakian’s complaint says the company failed to take “appropriate corrective action.” A statement from Daimler Trucks said it doesn’t tolerate discrimination and trains employees to avoid it. It also said the company is cooperating with the investigation and has hired an outside investigator to look into the allegations. The Oregon-based truck company is a subsidiary of Daimler AG, a German multinational corporation that also makes Mercedes-Benz automobiles. Earlier this year, Daimler Trucks broke ground fora new $150 million headquarters in Portland. When it announced its plans last year, Daimler it said it ex pected to add up to 400 white-collar jobs when con struction is complete, expected in 2016. At the time, its Portland workforce was 2,800, in cluding about 750 people in blue-collar manufacturing jobs making Western Star trucks. —Associated Press human resources coordinator with Portland Fire and Rescue. • • Children in Poverty Children First for Oregon, a child advocacy group, released a report last week that children of color in the state have fewer opportunities than their white peers in every region of Oregon. He was a regular Portland performer, and lived to be 76.
