Daimler accused of
racial harassment and
failure to take action
Oregon ’ s labor commissioner has filed a complaint
against heavy-duty truck and school bus manufac
turer Daimler Trucks North America, alleging five
employees at its north Portland plant were subjected
to racial slurs and threats.
A statement last week from Commissioner Brad
Avakian says the accusations will be investigated,
and if they bear out, workers could be awarded dam
ages including back pay if they’ve quit.
Among the allegations is that a Daimler Trucks
employee threatened a black co-worker with a noose,
saying he’d drag the African-American behind a car,
the statement said.

A young Somali American was sen
tenced last week to 30 years in prison for
plotting to detonate a bomb in Portland's
downtown square while 10,000revelers
gathered to watch the lighting of a Christ
mas tree. Prosecutors had sought a 40-year term for
Mohamed Mohamud, 23, in the 2010 plot that actually
was an FBI sting. But the judge said Mohamud's youth
and remorse for his actions helped lower his sentence.
Gresham to Hire Extra Police
The City of Gresham was awarded a $250,000 grant
through the U.S. Department of Justice last week,
creating funds that will be used to hire two roving
school officers, one focused on gang issues, another

died last week. The accident also killed
Steve Fritz, the husband of Portland City Commissioner
Amanda Fritz. Fairchild was married to Jim Fairchild, a
Avakian’s complaint says the company failed to
take “appropriate corrective action.”
A statement from Daimler Trucks said it doesn’t
tolerate discrimination and trains employees to avoid
it. It also said the company is cooperating with the
investigation and has hired an outside investigator to
look into the allegations.
The Oregon-based truck company is a subsidiary of
Daimler AG, a German multinational corporation that
also makes Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
Earlier this year, Daimler Trucks broke ground fora
new $150 million headquarters in Portland. When it
announced its plans last year, Daimler it said it ex
pected to add up to 400 white-collar jobs when con
struction is complete, expected in 2016.
At the time, its Portland workforce was 2,800, in
cluding about 750 people in blue-collar manufacturing
jobs making Western Star trucks.
