But there is so much more here. This is a story of the power of out siders. The three main children are staked at various points on the spec trum of outsiders—the social misfit, the misunderstood genius, and the person whose capacity to blend in comes at the expense of his essen tial self, who then remains impris oned in loneliness. This story pro foundly illustrates the pressures most humans feel to conform to norms that squash the deep truths o f their being, and how it is that outsiders make the best containers for the most challenging truths. Reflecting on my own experience of childhood and my current experi ence of adulthood as I watched this story gave me a balanced set of reasons to w eep -at how this story must have resounded for me then and how it encourages me now. And that is reason enough to re- stage this inspiring bit of theater. Darleen Ortega is a judge on the Oregon Court o f Appeals and the first woman o f color to serve in that capacity. Peace Choir Welcomes All Voices The Portland Peace Choir, a com munity choir that welcomes all voices, wants to expand its member ship as it launches a new season. Harrison St. Rehearsals begin in September, but all are invited to visit on any Wednesday they choose. There are no auditions neces sary; all skill levels are welcome.
