The vote Tuesday m arked the end o f a grueling race. For Obama, the election is the last time his name will appear on a ballot, or so he claims. For Rom ney, the elec tion closed out a nearly six-year run for the presidency. The Re publican nom inee ran unsuccess fully in 2008. O bam a’s 2012 cam paign slo gan was forward! The race was different from 2008, when Obam a ran on a lofty m essage o f change and leveraged voter dissatisfac- tion with the G eorge W. Bush adm inistration — and particularly the war in Iraq - to defeat Repub lican nom inee John M cCain. T h is tim e a ro u n d , e a c h candidate's cam paign m essage was bound to the state o f the econom y, having suffered a re cession shortly before O bam a to o k o ffic e . R o m n ey a rg u e d forcefully that O bam a failed to deliver the kind o f econom ic re bound that typically follow s a dow nturn. The Republican nom inee ac cused the president o f throwing m oney at the problem w ith a poorly designed stimulus, and then abandoning the issue altogether to focus on passing Obam aCare. Rom ney argued that the health care law, along with countless regulations and an allegedly anti business attitude, all com bined to stand in the way o f a full-throated recovery. Issues like the Libya terror at tack and the threat from Iran's nuclear program brought foreign p o lic y in to the m ix, but the econom y rem ained central. But O bam a argued all along that, despite the slack in the sys tem, the country was m oving in the right direction. He pointed to recent econom ic reports, includ ing Labor Departm ent data show ing the jobless rate falling below 8 percent for the first time since he took office, as signs that the e co n o m y w as im p ro v in g and would get better over time. He w a rn ed th a t R o m n e y ’s agenda — which he described as Hurricane Sandy Relief Donations To help Hurricane Sandy victim s on the East Coast, W ells Fargo has program m ed m ost o f its ATM s, including those in Oregon and southwest W ashington, to enable its custom ers to donate to the Am erican Red Cross relief efforts. There is no fee for the service. W ells Fargo will send 100 percent o f the donations to the Am erican Red Cross. ‘T h e coming days and weeks are going to be difficult for those impacted by this devasting, his toric storm and Wells Fargo wants to help,” said Don Person, Oregon Wells Fargo regional president. W ells Fargo is also donating $1 million, which includes $250,000 for the A m erican Red Cross D isaster R elief Fund to support relief efforts the agency is directing with the rem aining $750,000 going to nonprofits conducting grassroots relief and recovery efforts in the affected areas.
