W hitney H ouston's m other, C issy, provided the em otional highlight o f S unday's cerem ony as she sang "Bridge O v er T ro u b led W ater" in tribute to h er late daughter, leaving audience m em bers like B eyonce and S oulja B oy in tears. M ariah C arey o pened the tribute, and h er voice w avered as she told stories about H ouston. She re called the last tim e she saw H ouston last year, and how the tw o laughed and gossiped together. "I m iss m y friend," C arey said. "I m iss hearing her voice and laughter." R & B sin g er M onica w as vocally top-notch as she sang "I L o v e the Lord," a gospel song once sang by H ouston; B randy sang tw o upbeat H ouston hits, "I W anna D ance W ith Som ebody" and "I'm Y our Baby T onight." C haka K han blazed the stage w ith "I'm E very W om an," w hich H ouston rem ade. G ary H ous ton, W hitney's brother, also perform ed; and H ouston's "W aiting to E xhale" castm ates — A ngela B assett, L ela R ochon and L oretta D evine — also honored the singer. B ut it w as C issy H ouston's soaring perform ance that brought the au d ien ce to th eir feet, and had m any dabbing th eir eyes. T he tribute cam e five m onths after H ouston's death: She died the night before the G ram m y A w ards o f an accidental dro w n in g com plicated by heart disease and cocaine use. As com pelling as that m om ent w as, the show w as also defined by its low points: E ntire segm ents o f p erform ances, from N icki M inaj to R ick R oss, w ere m uted out due to foul language and obscenities, though several vulgarities w ere heard on air. W est, the m ost n om inated act o f the night w ith seven, and Jay -Z w on the cerem o n y 's top prize, earn ing video o f the y ear fo r "O tis." T h ey also w on best group. B eyonce w as the second m ost n om inated act w ith six. She w on video director o f the year (along w ith Alan F erguson) and best fem ale R & B artist and thanked the genre and h er fem ale influences. "I fell in love w ith m usic by listening to R & B . It’s the core o f w ho I am ," she said, giving special thanks to Lauryn H ill, M ary J. B lige and "W hitney H ouston, m y angel." C hris B row n w as also a double w inner, picking up his second co n secu tiv e w in for best m ale R & B artist, and the "Fandem onium " aw ard fo r a third tim e. T he night also featured som e tributes to deceased greats: C hante M oore p erform ed a m edley o f D onna S u m m er’s hits and V alerie S im pson sang a song in honor o f her husband and w riting partner N ick A shford. D on C ornelius, D ick C lark and Hal Jackson w ere also rem em bered.
