Park Ave., downtown. The mission of the Colored Pen cils Art and Culture Council is to uphold the dignity of all people by creating an artistically and cultur ally rich environment where every one feels safe to express their uniqueness. Honoring the founding tribes of Oregon, a Native American perfor mance will start off the evening. T w o p erfo rm an c e s by re c en t émigrés from Mexico and Zimba bwe will follow to continue to con nect the past to the breadth of Portland’s newcomer experiences. Singer and songw riter Edna Vazquez spent her first 16 years in Jalisco, Mexico. Since coming to the Chido Dhliwayo States, Vazquez has pursued her music career, writing songs and p erform ing at various venues throughout Oregon, as well as in nationally televised shows and con tests. Chido Dhliwayo, an international student from Zim bab w e, w ill present a native dance. When not p e rfo rm in g , Chido is focused on learning busi ness skills that will one day prove useful in helping developm ent in her home country ofZimbabwe. Art and Cul ture Night begins with a reception at 5 :3 0 p.m . Odessa Too will cook up tra d i tional A frican- A m erican c u i sine, and will of fer small bites for sale.
