One o f the most serious prob lems facing fam ilies today is dia betes, an autoim m une disease in which the body cannot produce any or enough insulin. Diabetes afflicts m illions o f Am ericans and can lead to devastating health com plications, including blindness, kidney failure and am putation. Each day, more than 2,000 A m eri cans are diagnosed with diabetes, and experts predict that the num ber will nearly double by 2025. U nfortunately, the disease dis proportionately affects those o f us in the African Am erican com munity. A ccording to the A m eri can Diabetes Association, A fri can A m ericans are 1.8 tim es more likely to have type 2 diabetes - the m ost com m on form o f the dis ease - than the general popula tion. An estim ated 2.3 million A fri can Am ericans, or a staggering 11 percent, have been diagnosed with diabetes, which is now the by L arry L ucas fo u rth -lead in g cause o f death among African Americans. Many more are unaware they are at high risk, often because o f a lack o f sym ptom s or failure to get tested. The AD A recom m ends that those over 45 years o f age should get tested especially if they have a fam ily history o f diabetes, an in active lifestyle, and high blood pressure or cholesterol. Diabetes has turned into an em erging public health problem , especially among youth, due to an increase in child obesity and inac tivity. Especially now, parents, educators and com m unity lead ers should pay particular atten tion to how our children are eat ing and exercising. Taking simple steps to live a healthy lifestyle can go a long way in preventing and m anaging diabetes.
