For Your Health
I encourage you to recognize
the role we all play in fostering a
healthy lifestyle for the entire fam
ily.
One o f the most serious prob
lems facing fam ilies today is dia
betes, an autoim m une disease in
which the body cannot produce
any or enough insulin. Diabetes
afflicts m illions o f Am ericans and
can lead to devastating health com
plications, including blindness,
kidney failure and am putation.
Each day, more than 2,000 A m eri
cans are diagnosed with diabetes,
and experts predict that the num
ber will nearly double by 2025.
U nfortunately, the disease dis
proportionately affects those o f
us in the African Am erican com
munity. A ccording to the A m eri
can Diabetes Association, A fri
can A m ericans are 1.8 tim es more
likely to have type 2 diabetes - the
m ost com m on form o f the dis
ease - than the general popula
tion.
An estim ated 2.3 million A fri
can Am ericans, or a staggering
11 percent, have been diagnosed
with diabetes, which is now the

among African Americans. Many
more are unaware they are at high
risk, often because o f a lack o f
sym ptom s or failure to get tested.
The AD A recom m ends that those
over 45 years o f age should get
tested especially if they have a
fam ily history o f diabetes, an in
active lifestyle, and high blood
pressure or cholesterol.
Diabetes has turned into an
em erging public health problem ,
especially among youth, due to an
increase in child obesity and inac
tivity. Especially now, parents,
educators and com m unity lead
ers should pay particular atten
tion to how our children are eat
ing and exercising.
Taking simple steps to live a
healthy lifestyle can go a long
way in preventing and m anaging
diabetes. One o f the nation’s m ost
