A lcoholism affects m illions o f A m e ric an s, d e v a sta te s fa m ilies, c o m p ro m ises n atio n al p re p a re d ness, depresses econom ic vitality, and burdens the country's health care system s. A lcohol abuse and alcoholism result from a com plex interplay o f genetic and environm ental factors, according to G rant and h er col- leagues. M uch o f the stress in m odem society is a subjective state o f anxi ety, w here com peting goals g en er a te c o n flic t a n d a c tiv a te b ra in m echanism s involved in arousal and attention. T hese stressful states are often seem ingly relived by drinking alcohol and m ay be a prim ary factor in establishing excessive alcohol co n su m p tio n . "W hile there is a great deal o f evidence supporting stress-alcohol interactions, less is know n about how these interactions alter the brain at the m olecular, cellular and systems levels to m aintain excessive drinking and alcoholism — and why this ad diction is so difficult to treat,” G rant said. "This consortium is tackling the larger picture o f brain m echanism s that control alcohol consum ption, the response to stress in these brain areas, and the reciprocal relationship b etw een e x cessiv e d rin k in g , the physiological state o f stress and the subjective state o f anxiety.” H ealth W Dr. Billy R.
