Hood Welcomes New Students PCC Celebrates 50-years of Service Anniversary events begin with new school year Portland Com m unity College has 50,000 reasons why its new school year, which starts on Monday, Sept. 26, will be one to remember. The college is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a kick-off celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7 in PioneerCourthou.se Square located at 701 S.W. 6th Ave. The program will feature high-energy music from the Li ons of Batucada, interactive exhibits from PCC programs, and refreshments from local businesses. “This isn’t just any year,” said PCC District President Preston Pulliams. “This is the start o f Portland Com m unity College’s 50th anniversary. And w e’re kicking off a year of celebration in a big w ay.” In honor of the historical milestone, the college has pledged to donate 50,000 hours of service to the community. PCC will partner with local community ser vice efforts throughout the year to achieve its goal, which means PCC will double to triple the number of projects and hours it usually organizes in one year. “I’m super excited that the college has committed to 50,000 hours of ser vice,” said Sarah Tillery, PCC’s ser vice-learning coordinator and the one charged with overseeing the 50th cel ebration service projects. “I think that it will be a huge commitment. I think these events will be a great opportunity to be together and contribute something back to this community that keeps this place going and alive.” Committed to helping students suc ceed, Mt. Hood Community College is holding an orientation day for new stu dents beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Gresham Campus, where students will have the opportunity to hear about academic programs, and cam pus resources. “We encourage all students - new students, in particular - to attend O ri entation at least once w hile enrolled at M H C C ,” said Sydney Eustrom , m an ager o f student outreach and high school services. “Students will have the opportunity to tour the Gresham cam pus and connect with other stu dents, as well as meet student leaders, faculty and staff.” Serving more than 33,000 students each year, Mt. Hood Community Col lege provides students the education needed for the career of their choice and offers more than 70 associate degrees, certificate programs and transfer op tions in a wide variety of disciplines. Following orientation, the bookstore will hold an open house, from 1 to 3 p.m., with tours and door prizes. The College Center will also hold an ice cream social from 1 - 4:30 p.m., while students are getting photos taken for their MHCC activity card.
