At issue was pay ment o f a billion-dol lar legal settlem ent with thousands o f A f rican-American farm ers who for decades were illegally denied essential crop loans from the A griculture D e partm ent. The settlem ent was agreed to way back in 1 9 9 9 -y et, for more than a decade, W ashington has refused to pay. This year, how ever, justice was finally to be de livered when President Obama set aside $ 1.2 billion in his budget to make good on the governm ent prom ise. But it's been a no-go, as congressional Republicans have furiously fought the payments. O fcourse, the GOP lawm akers insisted that they certainly sup port racial justice, but alas, they wailed, the bloated federal deficit now com pels them to cut spend ing. N ever mind that they are the ch ie f bloaters! In the past decade, they ea gerly and reck lessly added trillions o f dol lars to the national debt with unwarranted wars, tax cuts for the rich, bailouts for Wall Street, and subsidies for enor m ously profitable corporations. Indeed, these very law m akers continue to support $4 billion a year in needless giveaw ays to Big Oil — but they abruptly turn into tightw ads on a single billion-dol lar allocation owed to A m erica's black farmers. So while pundits and politicos were vilifying Sherrod for an act o f discrim ination that didn't oc cur, Senate Republicans cut the paym ents for thousands o f offi cial acts o f actual discrim ination against African-American farmers.
