Maurice Lucas, will join Trail Blazers Head Coach Nate McMillan’s coaching staff as assistant coach. A five-tim e A ll-Star in the ABA/NBA, Maurice helped lead the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 W orld C ham pionship. He served as the Vice President of the NBA Players A ssociation for eight years. A fter finishing his playing career on the Trail B laz ers roster during the 1987-88 sea son, Lucas served the follow ing season as an a ssista n t coach under M ike Schuler and Rick Adelman. He currently serves as a member of the Board of the NBA R e tire d P la y e rs A sso c ia tio n . “M aurice Lucas was an estab lished veteran in Seattle my rookie season. Ala. Eddie, as he was affectionately referred to was the Middle Weight Boxing Champion, and part of the dynamic Olympic Team with Muhammad Ali and Wilbur “Skitter” McClure. The culmination of a boxing ca reer that began when he was grow ing up in Detroit at the Career- Brewster Center, eventually led to his achieving the Golden Glove Championship Award, and the win ner of several military champion ships. Following his Olympic ac complishments. Eddie retired from boxing and pursued a career with the U.S. Army gaining several ath letic achievements with the All Army Football Team. He served as quarterback on the championship football team and was named The Most Valuable Player of the 3erlin Bears and the CISM Champion- European. Eddie demonstrated his leader ship skills during his 30 years in the military by being appointed Com mand Sergeant Major and served twotoursin Vietnam. Hisdedicated service earned him the “Silver Star," Edward 'Eddie' Crook Jr. two "Purple Hearts" and a “Bronze Star”. In 1961, Eddie was appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for the United States and the continent of Africa. His love for the development of young minds and willingness to share his skills and knowledge, led him to mentor many individuals includingCoach Kenny Adams, the first African A m erican Boxing Coach for the Olympics. The Eddie Crook Jr. Youth Lead ership Development Foundation will be established in his honor to continue his legacy in inspiring youth to reach their full potential.
