C utí T he P ortland O bserver A multicultural film festival at Jefferson High School is allowing diverse cultures to speak for them selves. T h a t’s the goal for Jennifer Doncan, English teacher and coor dinator of the fourth annual free film festival for students and the community. "Every movie has a different cultural base and each culture shown in a docum entary is mir rored by the co-facilitator that evening,” Doncan said. After a viewing of the docum en tary, which is shown the first M on day o f each month from October through May, the facilitator hosts a discussion about the film and the culture highlighted. "I believe it’s necessary for every culture to speak for itself and for us not to assum e by inter action or association that we are au th o rities on som eone e ls e 's cu ltu re,” said D oncan. Fusion Album Out Ghetto rock and righteous hip-hop star Mos D ef has just released his new solo release, “The New Danger," marking his first collection o f original material since I999's "Black on Both Sides.” A kick-off tour for the CD begins in Seattle. Oct. 18 at Benoryhall Hall. No Portland appearances are scheduled. Mos D ef just marked the television debut o f his Black Jack Johnson Band on the Sept. 23 on the Late Show with David Letterman. On Oct. 4, he took the stage at the A CLU ’s Freedom Concert in New York City. A dancer from the Martha Graham Dance Company performs the Satyric Festival Song. The Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest and most celebrated contemporary dance company in America. Martha Gra ham ( 1894 -1991) herself was rec ognized as one o f the most influ ential artists of the 20th century, alongside Picasso, Stravinsky and James Joyce. Graham founded her company in 1926 and developed a dance technique that “would increase the em otional activity o f the comics. Having him host the Oscars is terrific.” The one-tim e "Saturday Night Live" regular has won three Emmys for his TV pro grams and two Grammys for hiscomedy albums. Rock cur rently is shooting a remake of "T he L ongest Y ard” with Adam Sandler and recently provided the voice of the ze bra in the animated feature "M adagascar," both to be re leased in May 2005. His other film credits include "Pootie T a n g ," "B ad C o m p a n y ,” "Down to Earth" and "Nurse Betty." The 77th Academy Awards telecast is set for Feb. 27. The Academy o f Motion Picture Arts and Sci ences announced Chris Rock will host the next Academy Awards telecast. Rock, w ho's been in the films "Head of State" and “Dogma," is best known for his standup com edy specials “Bigger& Blacker,” "Bring the Pain" and "N ever Scared.” R ock, 39, has prev io u sly h o ste d th e M T V ’s M ovie Awards.
