M arshall and R oosevelt High School. Because these sports fields lack lights, their football and soccer teams must play their “home gam es" during the day or at other schools, leaving athletes, students and parents o f these schools feeling like second class citizens and diminishing turnout at games. T he light poles have been pur chased and will arrive soon, and m em bers o f the International Brotherhood of Electrical W ork ers Local 48 have volunteered to do the electrical work for free. Portland Public S chools A th letic D irector Greg Ross c re d ited Francesconi with sup p o rt ing the project and finding p art ners and money to m ake it h ap pen. Joe Esm onde, R epresentative of 1BEW - Local 48, said, "our electricians are part o f the co m munity and are proud to be able to give back by donating their services to this effort. W e're especially proud to be giving back in a way that builds co m m unity, by en c o u rag in g stu dents, parents and the com m u nity to com e together and cheer the neighborhood team ." The volunteer labor from IBEW is the equivalent o f a $100.000 donation to these three high schools and their com m unities. Scouts Host Golf Marathon The Cascade Pacific Council of Boy Scouts of America and golfers will take part in the 2nd Annual Golf Marathon, Mon day, Oct. 11 at Langdon Farms GolfClub. Over 40 players will hack, slice and putt their way through KM) and more holes of golf in one day to raise funds for scout ing programs. K ent founded the Self-Improvement Pro gram, a groundbreaking program that has received nationwide atten tion. It puts the well being of his students at the forefront by help ing athletes transition after gradu ation. A 1977 graduate o f Oregon with a degree in community service and public affairs, Kent helped lead the Ducks to a No. 8 ranking as a sopho more. He completed his collegiate career averaging 7.1 points and 1.8 rebounds while playing with the likes of Greg Ballard, Stu Jackson and Ron Lee. Kent and his wife Dianna have three children: sons Marcus, 21, and Jordan, 19, who plays basket ball and runs track for the Ducks, and daughter McKenzie, 18. All three are UO students.
