In aclosely-w atched race for state representative in north and north east Portland, C hip Shields beat out T ina Kotek for the Democratic nomi nation. Shields, executive director o f Bet ter People, a northeast Portland jo b training program for form er inmates, captured 4,628 votes and Kotek, a ch ild ren ’s services advocate, re ceived 3,793 votes. Shirley W hite- head Freeman had 545 votes to win James Posey the Republican nomination. Shields and Freem an will face o ff in the No vem ber general election. M ul tnom ah County com m ission ers Lonnie Roberts and M aria Rojo de Steffey won their re-elections, despite criticism about R ojo de Steffey's involvem ent with deciding in secret to allow same-sex marriages in the county. County Commissioner Lisa Naito, another leader in the same-sex marriage decision, will face a runoff against sec ond-place finisher Ron McCarty. Presidential hopeful Sen. M ore than 20 M ichigan counties w ere under flood w arnings and several rivers were over flood stage. T w o tornadoes touched dow n Sunday in W isconsin and tw o were reported in Michigan. Earlier, three people were killed Friday when wind blew trees onto vehicles in M ichigan, a tornado killed a w oman in N ebraska and flooding killed a woman in Iowa. Storms in O hioearly M onday knocked out pow er to more than 30,(XX) hom es and businesses, utilities said. Several schools closed because they had no electricity.
