must educate itself and head to the
polls in this fall*selection,according
to speakers at the H ip-H op Summit,
w hich drew artists and others from
the m usic industry.

hip-hop industry know this is the
b est g e n e ra tio n in th e w o rld ,”
Sim m ons told a crow d o f music fans
Saturday at the Fox T heatre in D e­
troit. “A nd com e N ovem ber, they
are going to see that this is the m ost
pow erful generation that the w orld
has seen.”

people o f different races and reli­
gions.
“It’s very im portant that w e flex
these muscles in November," he said.
The H ip-H op T eam Vote effort
holds voter registration drives at
sum m it cities. It recently registered
50,000 voters in Los A ngeles and
80,000 in Philadelphia. M idw ay

said it had signed up at least 70,000
M ichigan voters - including 40,000
in Detroit.

the election by form er police chief
T om Potter w ho suiprised critics by
earning 42.3 percent o f the vote. He
will face City C om m issioner Jim
Francesconi, w ho earned 34.5 per­
cent o f the vote, in a runoff election
in Novem ber.
Posey w on 5.1 percent o f vote
and Phil Busse, editor o f the Portland
M ercury and a north Portland resi­
dent, earned 7.2 percent.
In other races, C ity C om m is­
sioner Randy L eonard w on re-elec­
tion w ith m ore than 50 percent o f
the vote. C ity C ouncil hopefuls
N ick Fish and Sam A dam s, running
to fi 11 F rancesconi' s seat, wi 11 co m ­
pete in the N ovem ber runoffs as
neither secured a m ajority vote.
In aclosely-w atched race for state
representative in north and north­
east Portland, C hip Shields beat out
T ina Kotek for the Democratic nomi­
nation.
Shields, executive director o f Bet­
ter People, a northeast Portland jo b
training program for form er inmates,
captured 4,628 votes and Kotek, a
ch ild ren ’s services advocate, re­
ceived 3,793 votes. Shirley W hite-
head Freeman had 545 votes to win

vem ber general election.

Storms Devastate Midwest
T housands o f homes and businesses had no pow er M onday across
the M idw est because o f thunderstorm dam age, and flooding filled
basem ents and blocked roads.
M ore than 20 M ichigan counties w ere under flood w arnings and
several rivers were over flood stage.
T w o tornadoes touched dow n Sunday in W isconsin and tw o were
reported in Michigan. Earlier, three people were killed Friday when wind
blew trees onto vehicles in M ichigan, a tornado killed a w oman in
N ebraska and flooding killed a woman in Iowa.
Storms in O hioearly M onday knocked out pow er to more than 30,(XX)
hom es and businesses, utilities said. Several schools closed because
they had no electricity. More than 6,000 had no pow er in Indiana.
