But the older Van Peebles gave a glim pse o f the difficulties in m ak ing the original. “The unions in Hollywood were all white and I wanted to use a crew o f 50percent minorities," said Melvin Van Peebles, 71. “But the unions would not allow me to do that." His trick: He told them he was m aking a pom movie. “The unions will leave you alone if you tell everyone y o u ’re doing a p o m ,” he told a new s conference at the festival.
