Black Power Film Draws from Past
Mario Van
Peebles plays
famous father
(A P )— M ore than 30 years after
his father m ade a revolutionary
black-power film, director Mario Van
Peebles also w anted to have an
ethnically diverse crew on the set -
but he did n ’t have to go to the
lengths his father did.
Van Peebles, 47, at the annual
Berlin Film Festival to prom ote
“G ettin' the M an’s Foot O utta Your
B aadasssss,” due for release in
M ay, said it was som etim es “bi
zarre" to play his father, M elvin, in M ario Van P e e b le s (left) a n d h is father. M elvin, arrive a t th eir
the raucous account o f how his dad “B a a d a s s s s s ! ” p re m iere , during th e S u n d a n c e Film F estiva l in
made the 1971 “Sweet Sw eetback’s P ark City, Utah. (AP p h o to )
Baad A sssss Song.”
“ It w as exciting, because we
w ound up making it in the spirit o f
the original,” said the younger Van
Peebles, w hoco-w rote, directed and
stars in the film. That included hav
ing a diverse crew.
But the older Van Peebles gave
a glim pse o f the difficulties in m ak
ing the original.
“The unions in Hollywood were
all white and I wanted to use a crew
o f 50percent minorities," said Melvin
Van Peebles, 71. “But the unions
would not allow me to do that."
His trick: He told them he was
m aking a pom movie.
“The unions will leave you alone
if you tell everyone y o u ’re doing a
p o m ,” he told a new s conference at
the festival.
