The New Growth Landscape Tree Ser vice owner is in the midst o f a four-month landscape installation jo b at Portland Community College’s new Southeast Cen ter on Southeast 82nd Avenue and Divi sion Street. Kolodziejczak says he is thrilled to be working on a project for the college. He worked his way through school while employed at large landscape firms such as Cedar Landscape and Teufel Nursery Inc. “I owe a lot to PCC,” he said. “The courses were outstanding, and the in structors were invaluable. It’s kind o f ironic, I went out on my own and now I have a $500,000job for PCC.” Kolodziejczak earned an associate’s degree in the early 1990s and is now a certified landscape technician and a li censed landscape contractor. His contract is part o f the college’s ongoing effort to help spread money to PCC’s Minority, Women and Emerging Small Business effort, an outreach pro gram set up through the 2,000 construc tion bond. The program networks with key organi zations and businesses in the community to h elp sp rea d c o n tra c t m oney to underrepresented workers and companies. The new Southeast C enter w ill pro vide residents in outer southeast P ort land greater access to h igher educa tion. Approximately 1,400 more students will be able to take classes at the larger center. The $ 18 m illion, 95,000 square- foot facility is targeted to open in w inter of2004.
