A vants w as acquitted o f m urder during a state trial in 1967, but the federal charge o f aiding and ab et ting m urder w as filed after authori ties realized recently the victim had been killed on federal land. Prosecutors told thejury 37 years could not w ash aw ay the horror o f W hite’s slaying or allow his killer to go free. The ju d g e had barred hate-crim e evidence from the trial, but pros ecutors freely noted that W hite w as black and the three suspects in the case w ere all w hite. T he defense argued the case hinged largely on statem ents by a long-dead suspect they said w as a chronic liar. . P rosecutors said A vants and tw o w hite com panions offered the 67-year-old W hite $2 and a soda to help them with a chore. The suspect has used at least 22 know n nam es, with a date o f birth and ID C ard num ber for each. Police said he fraudulently ob tains bi rth certi ficates from various counties, then uses the docum ents to get state ID cards. He then opens checking accounts w ith the falsi ID and w rites checks for purchases m ostly at chain stores. He w ill latei take the item s back, in another city for a cash refund. The suspect is a w hite m ale with a dark com plexion, w ho is possibl) m id to late 40s as he frequently uses identities w ith dates o f birth be tween 1954 and 1957.
