one point pounding on the hood

elderly woman.

black sharecropper, a crim e pros

dict w as read. Prosecutors said they

Jesse W hite, the 65-year-old son
o f victim Ben C hester W hite, said
after the verdict: " I t’s like being
hungry for so, so long and you get
ag o o d m eal under your belt. Y ou’re
not so hungry any m ore.”
A vants is the latest w hite defen
dant in recent years to be convicted
o f crim es from the nation’s civil
rights era and he could be one o f the
last. The verdict w as returned just
a few hours after final argum ents in
the case and ju s t three days after
th e fe d era l c o u r th o u s e in
J a c k so n , M iss. Friday. A v a n ts

A vants w as acquitted o f m urder
during a state trial in 1967, but the
federal charge o f aiding and ab et
ting m urder w as filed after authori
ties realized recently the victim had
been killed on federal land.
Prosecutors told thejury 37 years
could not w ash aw ay the horror o f
W hite’s slaying or allow his killer to
go free.
The ju d g e had barred hate-crim e
evidence from the trial, but pros
ecutors freely noted that W hite w as
black and the three suspects in the
case w ere all w hite. T he defense
argued the case hinged largely on
statem ents by a long-dead suspect
they said w as a chronic liar.

tw o w hite com panions offered the
67-year-old W hite $2 and a soda to
help them with a chore. W hite, w ho
had no connection w ith the civil
rights m ovem ent, w as driven to a
national forest, shot to death and
dum ped into a creek bed.

Police agencies in O regon and
W ashington are asking for help in
establishing the true identity o f a
man active in bank fraud using
falsely obtained O regon and W ash
ington Identification C ards from
department o f m otor vehicle offices.
The suspect has used at least 22
know n nam es, with a date o f birth
and ID C ard num ber for each.
Police said he fraudulently ob
tains bi rth certi ficates from various
counties, then uses the docum ents
to get state ID cards. He then opens
checking accounts w ith the falsi
ID and w rites checks for purchases
m ostly at chain stores. He w ill latei

for a cash refund.
