October 16. 2002 (Ebe ^ortlanb (Bbseruer Page A2 P olice North Portland Woman Convicted of Elder Abuse Daughter’s ‘gross neglect’ of her mother lead to death from infection caused by bedsores (A P)— One of the most horrify ing cases of elder abuse that pros ecutors said they had ever seen has resulted in a manslaughter conviction for the daughter of a 76- year-old woman who died from an infection blamed on bedsores. Karla Crosby, 39, who lived with her aging mother in a home on North Holman, now faces at least 10 years in prison for the death of her mother, Sheila Crosby, last Christmas Eve. Karla Crosby brought her mother to Sunnyside Kaiser Medical C en ter emergency room on Dec. 17 after returning from her job at a Portland silk-screening shop. She told doctors that her mother was having difficulty swallowing. Sheila Crosby was em aciated, covered in bedsores, dehydrated and m alnourished and suffered from dementia. Marla Schuman said BillyJoe Lynn Hemenway was be ing held for investigation o f first- degree rape. Police said Hemenway was a transient who had been released from a Nevada prison in June after spending 10 years behind bars on rape charges.
