North Portland Woman Convicted of Elder Abuse
Daughter’s ‘gross neglect’ of her mother lead to death from infection caused by bedsores
(A P)— One of the most horrify
ing cases of elder abuse that pros
ecutors said they had ever seen
has resulted in a manslaughter
conviction for the daughter of a 76-
year-old woman who died from an
infection blamed on bedsores.
Karla Crosby, 39, who lived with
her aging mother in a home on
North Holman, now faces at least
10 years in prison for the death of
her mother, Sheila Crosby, last
Christmas Eve.
Karla Crosby brought her mother
to Sunnyside Kaiser Medical C en
ter emergency room on Dec. 17
after returning from her job at a
Portland silk-screening shop. She
told doctors that her mother was
having difficulty swallowing.
Sheila Crosby was em aciated,
covered in bedsores, dehydrated
and m alnourished and suffered
from dementia. She was placed in
a convalescence center, where
she died a w eek later. An au-

Stanley Cohen, Kariye’s high-
