T he northeast Portland re si dent is the sole p ro p rie to r o f his ow n b u sin ess, nam ed the D avis G ro u p , P artn ers and R em odelers. He has 15 y ears o f experience in the hom e co n stru ctio n field and is fully li censed as a c o n tra c to r in both O regon and W ash in g to n . “T h e p a p e rw o rk ta k e s a w eek or so, but the benefits far outw eigh the task,” he said, describing the peace o f m ind that o p e ra tin g by the book brings. B om in Freeport, La., D avis m oved to Portland as a young man. He gained his first profes sional experience as an auto painter in a custom shop by restoring old cars and auto up holstery. "O ne thing led to another,” and soon he was painting houses, he said. D avis gained extensive ex perience in rem odeling as an employee with Drake Construc tion, w here he said he was en couraged to excel. He said the first hom e he restored to its original gran deur, was a neglected old house in the Irvington D istrict, now valued at a whopping $700,000. Fortunately forthe Dixons and their customers, paving is now complete and customers should find access to some o f the best ribs in town largely unfettered. Though traffic has been nar rowed to a lane in both directions, Dixon is hopeful light rail access will bring extra customers and a little added exposure. “W hen all is said and done,” Dixon says o f the project, “most o f our custom ers will be back. The hom es are large, high profile houses, that had lost their original character over the years w hen sid in g w as c o v e re d , porches destroyed and other architectural detailscovered up. “T he n atu ral charm w as taken out,” D avis said. He and his crew are re sto r ing the siding to its original m illw o r k , r e p la c in g th e porches w ith sw eeping w ood stru c tu re s, ad ding co lu m n s and shu tters. “I love restoration,” Davis said.
