Kern County Sheriff Carl Sparks said he w as certain the suspect, R oy D ean R atliff, 37, w ho was w anted for rape, was ju s t m inutes aw ay from killing the girls as a u thorities closed in on him in a rem ote location in the high desert, 100 m iles from w here they were kidnapped. “H e w as hunting for a place to kill 'em and bury 'em ," Sparks said on C N N ’s "L arry K ing L ive." He said the girls had been raped. W hen tw o deputies arrived, the m an pointed a gun at them , a u thorities said. The deputies shot at him num erous tim es w hile he sat in the car and struck him tw ice in the head, S parks said. Form er c h ie f financial officer Scott Sullivan, 40, and form er co ntroller D avid M yers, 44, surrendered to the FBI in the latest blow to the com pany and corporate A m erica, w hich has seen investors bail out o f the stock m arket because o f one accounting scandal after another. “W ith each arrest, indictm ent and prosecution, w e send this clear, unm istakable message: C orrupt corporate execu tives are no better than com m on thieves,” A ttorney G eneral John A shcroft said. Sullivan and M yers could get up to 65 years in prison if convicted on ch arg es o f securities fraud, conspiracy and filing false statem ents with the Securities and E xchange Commission. Sullivan w as released on $10 m illion bail, M yers on $2 m illion. S ulliv an’s bond w as secured by a m ultim illion- dollar m ansion under construction in B oca R aton, Fla. O utside court, S ullivan’s attorney, Irv N athan, called him “an honest and honorable m an” and accused the Justice D epartm ent o f m aking him a scapegoat. “W e deeply regret the rush to ju d g m en t and the political overtones involved,” N athan said. M yers' law yers said he w ould plead innocent if indicted. It w as the biggest such filing in U.S. history. Sullivan is accused of directing Myers to conceal about $3.8 bi Ilion in expenses on the company’s balance sheet. Bicyclist Struck by Pickup Dies Police are investigating a fatal traffic acci dent that killed a bicyclist identified as Jason M iller, 35 o f V ancouver. The accident happened on July 27 w hen Miller, entered the northbound lane o f Fruit V alley R oad and w as struck by a pickup truck traveling north, police said. W hen he ph y si cally intervened, one o f the suspects rem oved a loaded assault rifle from behind the seat o f the victim ’s pickup. T he victim and suspects struggled near the vehicle and w hile the victim regained control o f the assault rifle, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and began to run. As the suspects fled the victim pulled sec- ond gun from hi s pickup and fired 4 shots at the suspects w ho had gotten into their pickup.
