Sheriff Says Kidnapped Girls Faced Certain Death

on C N N ’s "L arry K ing L ive." He
said the girls had been raped.

w ounded in north and n ortheast Portland since
the beginning o f June, police say they are
having one o f th eir busiest sum m ers ever.

younger m em b ers - ages 17, 18 and 19 - o f
neighborhood gangs.
A spokesm an says som e are retaliatory
strikes for prio r violence, w hile others are
unrelated to prio r attacks.

T hursday on ch arges o f falsifying the books by $3.8 billion
at the n ow -bankrupt long-distance com pany — the second
time in a week that A m erican business leaders w ere led away
in handcuffs.
Form er c h ie f financial officer Scott Sullivan, 40, and
form er co ntroller D avid M yers, 44, surrendered to the FBI
in the latest blow to the com pany and corporate A m erica,
w hich has seen investors bail out o f the stock m arket
because o f one accounting scandal after another.
“W ith each arrest, indictm ent and prosecution, w e send
this clear, unm istakable message: C orrupt corporate execu
tives are no better than com m on thieves,” A ttorney G eneral
John A shcroft said.
Sullivan and M yers could get up to 65 years in prison if
convicted on ch arg es o f securities fraud, conspiracy and
filing false statem ents with the Securities and E xchange
Commission.
Sullivan w as released on $10 m illion bail, M yers on $2
m illion. S ulliv an’s bond w as secured by a m ultim illion-
dollar m ansion under construction in B oca R aton, Fla.
O utside court, S ullivan’s attorney, Irv N athan, called him
“an honest and honorable m an” and accused the Justice
D epartm ent o f m aking him a scapegoat. “W e deeply regret
the rush to ju d g m en t and the political overtones involved,”
N athan said.
M yers' law yers said he w ould plead innocent if indicted.
W orldC om , w hich ow ns M C I, the nation’s second-
largest long-distance com pany, filed for C hapter 11 b ank
ruptcy July 21 after disclosing the accounting abuses. It
w as the biggest such filing in U.S. history.
Sullivan is accused of directing Myers to conceal about $3.8
bi Ilion in expenses on the company’s balance sheet. That enabled
WorldCom to report profits when it was actually losing money.

Bicyclist Struck by Pickup Dies
Police are investigating a fatal traffic acci
dent that killed a bicyclist identified as Jason
M iller, 35 o f V ancouver.
The accident happened on July 27 w hen
Miller, entered the northbound lane o f Fruit
V alley R oad and w as struck by a pickup truck
traveling north, police said. T he victim died at
E m anuel H ospital in Portland.
T here w as no indication that the driver o f
the pickup truck, Jesse H efely, 22 o f V ancou ver,

The incident began at 2:16 p.m . on July 22,
near N ortheast 13"' A venue and H alsey Street
when the victim , a40-year-old Boring resident
returning to his parked pickup, saw tw o su s
pects attem pting to steal it. W hen he ph y si
cally intervened, one o f the suspects rem oved
a loaded assault rifle from behind the seat o f
the victim ’s pickup. T he victim and suspects
struggled near the vehicle and w hile the victim
regained control o f the assault rifle, one of the
suspects pulled out a handgun and began to
run.
As the suspects fled the victim pulled sec-
ond gun from hi s pickup and fired 4 shots at the
suspects w ho had gotten into their pickup.
O ne o f the suspects also fired one shot to
w ards the victim . D etectiv es believe the
v ictim 's bullets hit the front o r sides o f the
suspect vechicle, w hich is described as a dark
blue or black extended cab Ford F25O pickup,
w ith big tires, chrom e bum pers and fresh bullet
holes from a 7.62 caliber round. T he tw o sus
pects are described as w hite m ales in their 20’s,
5 feet, 9 inches to 6 feet tall. A third suspect,
also a w hite m ale w as driving the suspect
vehicle.
